Maybe if the author had written a complete book it might have been better...then again, it might have just been a whole lot more awful. Really morbid & weird.

Certainly good writing. Definitely a departure from the standard literary fare. Clearly it was titled appropriately, for it is disturbing. Otherwise it is utterly awful.

This novella is a slice of life out of a wealthy French family's sad homecoming. In the short span of the book, there is a great deal of tragedy, which seems to bounce from one member of the family to another. The behavior of the characters is eccentric, but not humorous. There's a sort of pall cast over the book, and in that sense it is atmospheric.

Lives up to its title. A disturbing look at loss, abuse, mourning, and familial bonds. Leaves you wanting at the end, though, and not in a good way; it seems like the author just ran out of steam. Intriguing nonetheless.
