Ca c'est le livre premier de Dune, la planete des sables, germe l'epice qui donne longevite et prescience.

This is the first part of the first book of Frank Herbert's famous book, Dune. The French translation seems more political to me than the original English, but then, I am not a native French speaker. There seemed to be heavier allusions to North Africa, especially to colonial Algeria, but again, this may only have been my interpretation, and my own impression about the French translation, spiced by my new found friendship with several Algerians in Paris.

Dune is one of my all time favorite books. When I found myself in Paris with nothing to read, I found this book, and it's companion, Tome 2, in a French Sci-Fi bookstore. Since I had read Dune in English perhaps 10 or more times, I was already quite familiar with the story, and thought that this would be an excellent way to improve my French reading skills.
I read the first few chapters slowly, with the help if an excellent French dictionary, but well before I was a third of the way into the book, I stopped using the dictionary, and forged ahead. What a great experience -- my first French novel, solo, and not in a classroom setting.
If you want to improve your French, and know the story, this is a great way to go. If your French is already impeccable, please let me know if my impressions about the translations were spot on, or a figment of my imagination.
