Graciliano Ramos was an important Brazilian writer of the early twentieth century. Ramos founded the "regionalism" literary movement. He was born in Quebrângulo, state of Alagoas, Brazil on October 27,1892 and he died in Rio de Janeiro, on March 20, 1953.

Graciliano's childhood was spent in poverty in cities of the Northeastern Brazilian region. After high-school, Graciliano went to Rio de Janeiro where he worked as journalist. In 1915 he moved to live with his father in Palmeira dos Indios, Alagoas. In 1927 he became mayor of Palmeira dos Indios.

His first book, Caetés was published in 1933. He was jailed by the Getúlio Vargas government on unclear charges. His Memórias do Cárcere was written as a memoir of his incarceration. His book Vidas Secas, which portrays the lives of the peoples of the Brazilian Sertão in the Northeast, and their struggles, is a masterpiece, and it is considered one of his best works.

Graciliano died in 1953, at 60.
