I loved this book.

Everyone has a book that is there favorite, some book that you could never part with and when you go back and reread it and meet the characters again, its like visiting old friends.

For me, this is the book.

Here is what its about.

From Library Journal
The Dark Horse and his minions search for the last true Appaloosa for their own nefarious purposes, while, from the Courts of the Outermost West, the Dancer enters the world to save his breed from extinction. In the tradition of Watership Down (1974) and Tailchaser's Song (DAW, 1986), Stanton explores the secret world of horses in a story full of adventure, myth, and peril that will appeal to both horse lovers and fantasy fans. Product Description
An epic fantasy about Duchess, an ill-tempered mare who is recognized as carrying the sacred Appaloosa genes which were abdicated as part of a pact with the Dark Lord. She and her breed are saved from extinction by the mysterious ancestral rainbow horse from the courts of the Outermost West.

This was my favorite book growing up, I read my first copy until its pages were falling out and the cover was gone. I then retired my first copy (it has an honored place on my bookshelf) and bought a newer copy. we moved a lot when I was kid and through switching schools and leaving friends behind, I always had Duchess and Susie, Pony and Cory (the Collie who plays a big part in the book). They may be fictional animals, but neverless they are lifetime friends and even now that I am in my thirties, I always enjoy picking this book back up again and revisiting the characters and following them on their journey.

There is a second book called Piper at the Gate and it follows the colt of Dancer and Duchess after he is grown and has a herd of his own. Even Cory, and old dog in the second book with grey on his muzzle finds his way into the second book. Many people wanted collies as kids because of Lassie. I wanted one growing up because of Cory.

Don't let the weird name put you off. This is a keeper. Excellent story line, excellent horse characters. I enjoyed it very much. If you like horse stories, I am sure you will enjoy this book. An interesting twist towards the end.
