Howard Rosenthal is an American professor, author and Psychotherapist. He is best known for his Special 15th Anniversary Edition Encyclopedia of Counseling dubbed the purple book (the color of the cover) by counselors and educators. The book’s popularity was spawned by Rosenthal’s somewhat unique upbeat and lively humorous style that is also evident in his Vital Information and Review Questions audio program. His materials help counselors prepare for the National Counselor Examination (NCE) which is often required to secure state counselor licensure or to receive the National Board for Certified Counselor’s (NBCC) National Certified Counselor (NCC) credential. His works also prepare helpers to take the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) sometimes required as an exit exam or in place of a thesis or scholarly paper in graduate counseling programs.

Rosenthal also penned the first-ever Human Services Dictionary. He is the author of several other influential books including Favorite Counseling and Therapy Techniques, a text that features the intervention strategies of the world’s top professional helpers designated as a publisher’s best seller.

He has lectured to over 100,000 people on mental health issues; mainly suicide prevention. Rosenthal has been the recipient of a record number of teaching tip awards conferred via Teaching for Success and he is listed in the 2009 and 2010 editions of Who’s Who in America.

He currently serves as a Professor and Program Coordinator of Human Services and Addiction’s Studies at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley in Missouri.
