Ugh. I couldn't get past page 17. The initial few pages are very interesting and well written. Then, however, the dialog starts... and it's AWFUL!!! I'm talking "B-movie, cliche, boring" awful. It was so bad that I couldn't imagine being able to finish the book.

Warning: This thriller will push you past the borders of suspense.

On a desolate island off the southern coast of Chile, an incredible discovery is made: a gigantic meteorite, the largest ever found, entombed in the earth for millions of years. Half a world away, billionaire entrepreneur Palmer Lloyd decides he must have it as the centerpiece of his grandiose new museum. He is willing to pay any price--in dollars and in lives. Getting it back to New York poses a particular challenge: It will be the heaviest object ever moved by humankind...

Fueled by Lloyd's money, an audacious expedition takes shape. Disguising a state-of-the-art ship as a rusted freighter, the expedition secretly heads southward with a fail-safe plan to steal the meteorite from Chile. Leading the group is an inscrutable engineer hired by Lloyd, and a world-famous meteorite hunter whose career was shattered by a controversial theory.

Soon, along the icy rim of Antarica, in the grip of a frozen hell, the adventurers are confronted with a terrifying enigma about the origin--and nature--of the meteorite. It is a mystery they must solve--if they are to escape with their very lives.

Palmer LLoyd is a man used to getting what he wants. He's a wealthy collector of rare artifacts. He now has his sight set on a meteorite discovered on Isla Desolacion, just off the coast of Chile. He hires Eli Glinn and Effective Engineering Solutions, EES, to work out a way to retrieve it and bring it back to New York. EES isn't known for failure but Glinn might have finally bitten off more than he can chew. Among the challenges will be the storms of the South Atlantic, coupled with a renegade Chilean Commandante who is hunting them down with a vengance. When they finally find the meteorite, they discover that it is much more than they imagined and the real question becomes, will they leave Chile alive?

The Ice Limit by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child is one wild ride. Perhaps best known for their collaborative Pendergast  series, this writing duo is like no other pair today. This book has it all: interesting plot, well-developed characters and a cliff-hanger ending. If you like Clive Cussler and Jack DuBrul, then Ice Limit should be at the top of your pile. I happily give this book 4/5 stars.

Here is another great story by Preston and Child. I listened to the abridged version on cassettes because it was the only recording available at the time. Scott Brick was the narrator and, as usual, he did a top-notch job.
In this story, we meet Eli Glinn for the first time (he appears in other 'Agent Pendergast' novels later on). Eli's engineering firm has the job of bringing the world's largest meteorite back to America from the southern most part of Chile. This meteorite is the heaviest object ever moved.
I love the Agent Pendergast novels but I also really liked this one too. Every time I listen to one of Preston's and Child's stories, I am amazed by the attention to detail. I end up learning a lot, well, about a lot of things. I really had a hard time "not listening". I started the tapes in the car with my husband. After we got home he went off to do something and I took the tapes and sat and listened until the story was over. I couldn't wait. Next time we were in the car, I heard the rest of the story again (but I didn't mind).
If you like the stories by Preston and Child, don't miss this one because it is only on cassette tapes.
ALSO: I read some of the other reviews on this book. I can understand why some people didn't like the beginning ... I think Scott Brick narration made the difference. He just knows how to tell a story!

Loved this book. There were a couple of times when it dragged just a touch, but all-in-all, it was a great story that kept me interested all the way to the end...and then some. Highly recommend.
