Smoke Screen :: Vincent Patrick
It doesn't take long before the uh-ohs start piling up in this solid thriller exploring a worldwide germ menace by the author of The Pope of Greenwich Village. Thanks to a virus discovered in Zaire in 1989, Cuba now has a biological weapon it can use to blackmail the U.S. just before the 1996 election. But the CIA has a line on the Cuban doctor, Ernesto Rivera, who's coming into the country to release the virus as a demonstration of its lethal capabilities. CIA head Lin Cutshaw asks ex-cop Teddy Tedesco to stage a hotel heist, in the course of which Rivera and his contact will be "accidentally" kidnapped. Teddy calls in an old adversary--Frank Belmonte, master thief--and feeds him a cover story, and the reader senses quite rightly that chaos is about to ensue. Patrick doesn't disappoint: when the kidnapping goes wrong, and the Cuban doctor escapes with the swag and the virus, all hell breaks loose, and it's the unlikely alliance between the ex-cop and the robber that propels the rest of the book. Patrick places these two characters in a world where nearly everyone else is out for themselves, including gangsters who want to get made, CIA agents who try clean house and federal agents who see a chance for the score of a lifetime. Patrick weaves these elements together with the casual mastery of a storyteller who plays against conventional plot twists. The result is a refreshingly taut, intelligent work of suspense.

Snow in April by Rosamunde Pilcher

When you read a novel by Rosamunde Pilcher you enter a special world where emotions sing from the heart. A world that lovingly captures the ties that bind us to one another-the joys and sorrows, heartbreaks and misunderstandings, and glad, perfect moments when we are in true harmony. A world filled with evocative, engrossing, and above all, enjoyable portraits of people's lives and loves, tenderly laid open for us...

Caroline travels to Scotland, hoping to make contact with a brother she hasn't seen for years, and return in time for her wedding to the man her strong-willed stepmother thought so suitable. Then a sudden snow strands her in an isolated house with a young man recovering from tragedy. Both are on the brink of terrible mistakes, but perhaps they can save each other.

Any of the books on my Shelf posted in '07 are available 2-for-1 (obviously, as the oldest on my shelf, this would be included!).......

In the Spotlight (Silver Blades)
Melissa Lowell
Nikki, Danielle, Tori, and Jill are four talented skaters who share one special dream--competing in the Olympics someday. And they're going to try to make it all happen in Silver Blades, the best skating club around!

Danielle Panati has always worked hard at her skating, and it's definitely starting to pay off. Danielle's just won the lead role in the Silver Blades Ice Show! Rehearsals go great at first, but then the other members of Silver Blades start noticing that Danielle's acting strange. Is it the pressure of being in the spotlight--or does Danielle have a secret that she doesn't want to share?

I clicked  "Watch this Topic" so that I could check everyone's post as it comes in. Because the temptation would be to not read other member's posts, but to just post your own.

Thanks for starting it, Arlene.
