Janet McDonald (b 1954 d. 2007) was an African American writer of novels for young adults as well as a memoir, Project Girl, about her own upbringing and education. Her best-known children's book is Spellbound, which tells the story of a teenaged mother who wins a spelling competition and a college scholarship. The book was named as the American Library Association's Best Book for Young Adults in 2002. McDonald lived in Paris for most of her adult life and died there on April 11, 2007, of cancer.

Janet McDonald, paid psychic Sylvia Browne $700 for a reading via telephone. She later wrote an article describing her disappointment in the results.[1] One that could not be falsified at the time concerned McDonald's longevity - "Oh, God, yes, a really long life" according to the psychic. McDonald died just over four years later, on April 11, 2007 of cancer, at the age of 53.

She was a member of Mensa, the high IQ society.
