Jeff Baron is an award-winning playwright from New York. He grew up in New Jersey and currently lives in Manhattan. He has a degree in film production from Northwestern University (S74) [1] and an M.B.A. from Harvard University.
Baron’s first play, Visiting Mr. Green, tells the story of widower Mr. Green, who almost hit by a speeding car driven by corporate executive, Ross Gardiner. Found guilty of reckless driving, Ross is ordered to spend the next six months making weekly visits to Mr. Green. What starts off as a comedy about two people who resent being in the same room together develops into a gripping and poignant drama, as family secrets are revealed and old wounds are opened.
Visiting Mr. Green starred Eli Wallach, ran for one year-long run at the Union Square Theatre in New York and was nominated as Best Play by the Drama League. It has been translated into 22 languages and performed around theworld in over 300 separate productions. Its awards include Best Play in Israel, Mexico, Greece, Uruguay, Germany and Turkey. It was a Best New Play nominee for the Molière Award in France and was nominated for both the A.C.E. and the Clarin Awards in Argentina for Best Play. For the production at Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna, Baron was awarded the KulturPreis Europa 2001, the first American and the first playwright to receive this award. He was invited in 1999 to speak at the United Nations and to present a reading of Visiting Mr. Green.
Mother's Day
His second play, Mother's Day, has been produced in Australia (Ensemble Theatre, Sydney), Germany (Schauspielhaus Wuppertal) and Brazil (Teatro FAAP - São Paulo) and the U.S. (BoarsHead Theatre, Lansing).
Bless Me, Father
His short play, Bless Me, Father, was commissioned and produced in New York as part of an evening of plays about September 11,2001.
Brothers-in-Law
His play, Brothers-in-Law, had its first production in 2008 at Act II Playhouse outside of Philadelphia. It has been recently translated into French, Italian and German.
Jeff Baron received a TCG/ITI Grant to create a Croatian production of his play, Mr. & Mrs. God. His collaboration with Moe Angelos, Edna and Joe Forever is moving toward a production in Germany. His series of comic plays What Goes Around... opened in New York in August, 2006. His newest play is When I Was Five. His one act play, Give 'em an Inch, was commissioned and produced in Los Angeles. He directed his commissioned one act opera, Song of Martina, at Carnegie Hall.
In addition to his work in theatre, Jeff Baron wrote and sold four original screenplays. His film The Bruce Diet won the CINE Golden Eagle award and has been featured at film festivals around the world. For television, he has written for The Tracey Ullman Show, A Year in the Life, Sisters, Almost Grown, Aaron's Way and Nickelodeon. His journalism, poetry and fiction have been published in New York Magazine, Dallas Times Herald, Tetu (Paris), T.O. (Toronto), and the New York Daily News. His song lyrics have been published and performed throughout the world.
