This is the book version of the movie "The Last Emperor" by Bertolucci. It is the story of Pu Yi, who became emperor at the age of 3. Growing up spoiled in his youth, and surrounded by concubines, he was taken prisoner by the Red Chinese. After being released, he lived out his last years as a gardener.
Beautiful discriptions of the Forbidden Place, the Imperial City, and China, with 16 pages of photographs. A well written work by a noted correspondent.
