Our last thread on this subject was getting a bit lengthy, so I've started a new one.

Here's the first review of this thread to clean up:

How do we clean these up? Just give it a "thumbs down"?

Also, are the reviews that give the book description okay? I've seen a lot of book reviews where it just has the book description from the back cover, instead of their actual opinion on the book. This irritates me, because most of them already have the book description on the main book page. If someone has a book description they want to add shouldn't that be done by editing book data?

Yeah are we supposed to click on the links you put to give them the thumbs down? Is that what gets rid of them? Or do we post links to bad reviews on here for the TPTB to remove?  I've been giving thumbs down to ones as I see them.

I am curious.  Are any of those reviews actually removed?    I look at some that were posted a long time ago and they are still there.

LeAnn, yes, all you need to do is give a "thumbs down" to the 'non-review' reviews.  Book descriptions belong in a data edit, not the book review area.   When PBS was new, there was no data edit function available, so a book review was the only place to add a description.  So a lot of books that were added a long time ago had the description added here.  But it doesn't belong here, and should be given a thumbs down now.

The more "thumbs down" reviews a review gets, the further down the page it's supposed to go, until it is removed entirely.  That's the theory, anyway.  Reviews that have many thumbs down reviews are eventually removed.  I guess it isn't a high priority, however, so it doesn't happen frequently and there are no immediate, right away results.

I wouldn't thumbs-down a review with a description in it unless the description also appears up where it is supposed to.

If the book data has been edited, thumb'm down--not needed anymore.  If it hasn't, then I leave it alone--it's useful still.

kayote - i thought 'book description', as they are talking about it here, meant, description of a particular copy. Which would make it not useful, because the review shows up on every copy. Like 'markings on back cover, inscription inside front page', that kind of thing?

The book description should not have any info on a personal copy.  If someone submits and edit with information such as 'highlighting,'  etc. it will be denied and put back to the regular description.  Hopefully, that's clear. :-)

Here's an example of the description in the review, but already has a book description on the books main page. Are these considered reviews that need to be cleaned up?

There is an actual review at the bottom so I wouldn't give it a thumbs down for cleanup.

BTW - I like your graphic!

Leann, I wouldn't thumbs down any actual reviews, even if they included the book description in their review.  And the books that don't have any review, that just have the description missing from the proper place, but listed in the review section instead - well, I'd submit the description by doing a data edit submission and thumbs down the "review".

The purpose of this cleanup is not to rate any actual reviews, just to get removed the non-review reviews.  The ones that list personal information, individual copy information, or other non-review material in lieu of an actual opinion of the book.

Here's one.  If you look down towards the bottom one review is only about how much they paid for the book and that it's missing a dust jacket.   http://www.paperbackswap.com/book/details/9781416505471-Captive+of+My+Desires

here's another: http://www.paperbackswap.com/book/details/9780553575026-Charming+the+Prince one is a really recent review about how the person won't send used books to anyone with a non-smoking RC and a couple are just repeating the book description which is present.

Since all members can now do book edits, it is greatly appreciated by others, if you find a book with a description of the story only in the reviews, please consider taking a couple minutes to copy that blurb from the publisher or back of the book, and put it up in the book's description if it is not there.

Then, you can post that book here, and note that the blurb has been added to the description so the blurb can be thumbed down and moved below the actual reviews of the book.

A comment for those that have not worked these before, first I reiterate the statement that we are NOT reviewing reviews, no condemnation, no criticism is intended if you don't get a thumbs up. This is only intended to move down the list the reviews that are not reviews.

And, Cozi, I think you are right, I don't believe they ever get removed either, but they do get moved to the end of the list by order of the number of thumbs up or down. So, if a book has 60 reviews, and 39 of them are repeats of the blurbs, they will get moved down below the real reviews and I don't have to sift thru all of them to get to the real ones.

Also a tip, always start at the last post and work backwards until you come to the last book you reviewed, then you are always hitting the new books, and each book gets hit by all the people working on it.

Just my thoughts on this :)

Here's another   http://www.paperbackswap.com/book/details/9780373288502-Roarkes+Folly+Rose+series+Bk+3+Harlequin+Historical+No+250 one just says they haven't read the book (then why review it?) and the others are just book descriptions repeated over and over.

I've not participated in any book info editing before, and I have to admit I find this really confusing.  Why is it necessary to get a lot of people involved to push the inappropriate reviews to the end of the line?  Why can't they just remove them?  Or give the power to do so to selected book editing volunteers?

Also, it might be a good idea to put the instructions on what to do in the first post of this thread, so newer members know what is being asked.  I always thought that members were just listing things here for the editing volunteers to correct.
