Donna Lee Poffs THE MASK is a wonderful example of a beautifully constructed Beauty and the Beast tale. From page one the reader will be totally mesmerized by the magically created cast of characters.
Galen Tarrant, Lord of Rosethorn, returns from the Crusades after an eleven-year absence to reclaim his land. Having been captured and savagely tortured by an archenemy, he now hides half of his face behind a mask. On a late night outing he happens upon Anne of Thornberry, the carpenters daughter. He is enchanted by this dainty "wood elf" who sits in the forest, with not a care in the world. Her innocence gives him the strength to once again trust in mankind. Her zest for life will shed light on his dark, tortured soul.

Anne of Thornberry, a fresh-faced village girl, is naive to the evils in which the world contains. On a fateful moonlit night she meets with Galen Tarrant, a dark, mysterious stranger. In her eyes she sees Galen as being perfect in every way possible. Her greatest challenge will be to convince Galen he is not the Beast he is convinced he has become. Little does she know danger looms in the shadows. A madman is determined to reek havoc once again, and finish the vengeance he once started.

THE MASK is a much treasured book. Its value is priceless in my library. It is one of those books, which can be read a thousand times over, and each time find something new and exciting. A word of caution - have plenty of Kleenex on hand when you experience it for the first time. Being so close to the characters, you will feel their pain and suffering as it enfolds before your eyes.

Really beautiful, touching, well-written by an author who never wrote another book as far as I can tell.

A beauty and the beast story of a man horribly scarred who meets his true love in a young village woman. The tenderness and sweet sadness of how the hero feels about himself, his ability to love, and his ability to protect those around him make your heart break within the first 10 pages. I'm not sure we ever get to know the heroine very well but she's the conduit to hearing his story and falling in love with someone so broken inside and out.

The love scenes in this book are not very steamy, but as with many well written romance novels, if the love story is well-told, the love scenes seem steamier. I always roll my eyes when the virgin has an instant orgasm when she makes love the first time - this book induced quite a bit of eye-rolling. But I can forgive it, I loved the story and the hero too much to care.

From the back cover

He traveled only at night, shrouded by darkness, his visage shielded by a leather mask. After eleven years, Galen Tarrant, Lord of Rosethorn, rode back from the Crusades to reclaim his lands, only to stumble upon the most beautiful golden-haired creature he had ever seen. In her arms he felt complete, but he could not allow himself to take her innocence when the demons of his past threatened to destroy everything he touched.

Sitting in the moonlight at the edge of the forest, she appeared to him as a delicate wood elf, but Anne of Thornbury was no spritely illusion. A fresh-faced village girl, Anne had no experience with love-until she met the brave yet reclusive lord with the hidden face and mysterious history. She soon realized that only with her love could Galen finally overcome the past and release his heart from the shadow of the mask.
