A wonderful novel of early times in England under King Alfreds rule. A great insight as to the struggle of Saxons and the Danes quest to posses and rule the land, one of Cornwells best.

This is Book 2 of the Saxon Chronicles.

Cornwell continues the story of Uhtred just as Wessex continues to fight for its survival against the relentlessly invading Danish armies.

Uhtred still finds himself far from his northern home, tied more formally to the southern Kingdom of Wessex and bound by oath to King Alfred, its crafty, pious, and sickly ruler.

Again, Cornwell manages to put Uhtred in difficult and dangerous situations that challenge not only his life but his loyalties as well. This book follows the story of Wessex from Alfred's exile in the swamps to the epic battle at Ethandun, and does so with all of the grit and guts and glory that I have come to expect from Cornwell's offerings.

If you read the first book and liked it, you will not be disappointed with the second. Cornwell is a consistently masterful storyteller and I can only expect this already great series to get nothing else except even better.

Another historically accurate thrilling tale of blood, revenge, and honor in the 9th century in England. This book is the 2nd of 3 in the Saxon Chronicles. The book follows Uhtred as he seeks to build a reputation for himself and to decide what oath to follow. Cornwell is an awesome story teller.

I enjoyed the ending of this series. I'll have to
keep an eye out for book 3.
