One of the "go to" books for understanding synagogue services and basic background material for the prayerbook.
This book is extremely accessible in comparison to books on the same subject matter written by George Robinson, Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz or Abraham Millgram.
If you are absolutely and completely new to synagogue services, start with the book by Jordan Lee Wagner called The Synagogue Survival Kit.

I am really enjoying this book. Rabbi Donin gives the history of the prayers and shares some of the deeper meanings. It has been a great tool to have alongside my women's siddur and has really been helping to make my prayer time more meaningful.
