This book has been quite the eye opener. For the past few weeks I've been making a conscious effort to eat mindfully, watching what I put into my mouth and thinking carefully about my food choices at the supermarket. Very well written and informative, my interest has been piqued and will be expanding my reading choices to include more books about real food, organic foods and sustainable agriculture.

This book was a waste of my time. I read the introduction, then decided that the rest looked so boring that I didn't want to read it. My view is that you don't have to worry about getting everything organic, unprocessed, blah, blah, blah. When you cook your own meals from scratch, you are eating so much better than McDonald's anyway, and not many people have the time and effort to go farther than cooking almost all your food from scratch, to worry about getting food that would basically come only if you had a farm, and unless you live on a farm, that requires TOO MUCH WORK. run-on sentence, I know. I don't think it is the best use of time to worry about the stuff in this book. Out there, there are going to be labels on every kind of food saying they cause cancer, etc. Homecooked meals and so forth are the best that most people can do. However, a garden is nice if you have the time, and you can get basically free produce that IS a lot better for you than supermarket. Or you can buy your produce from a farmer's market, but basically that is about the farthest that anyone should go. The most you should do is worry about eating foods that are in their least processed form and that are traditional foods like the pioneers would have eaten. I would recommend books like Homemade Pantry, by Alana Chernila and Make the Bread Buy the Butter by Jennifer Reese.
