This has to be one of my all time favorite books. I was mesmerized by the story and just how disturbed this character was. This is the only book I've ever read that I had to consciously stop reading because it bothered me to think about what was happening. I did set it aside for a day or so and then I was able to finish reading it. It was so disturbing I hesitate recommending it to people to read. In fact, since it's been several years since I read this, i just might read it again.

This is an excellent book. I read it for the first time quite some years ago and have re-read it many times. It haunts me each and every time. There's a fine line between hating and fearing the killer and feeling a tremendous sympathy for him in this book.

From the back cover: Thomas Bishop was twenty-five when he escaped from an institution for the criminally insane. For more than a decade the hospital had been his home. Behind him was a grotesque history of pain, murder and abiding rage. Ahead lay a path of vengeance that would deluge a nation in blood---a reign of terror. Very good story.

Although this was published in 1979, I have never read it. It was awesome. A first hand look inside a killer's mind. Excellent novel!

If you are a reader of true psychological thrillers dealing with the twisted mind of insanity and what we as humans are capable of, this is an excellent read. It's been a while since I've read this but it was the ONLY book I've ever had to stop reading because the character was really sick. If you enjoy Hannibal or true crime books, you will enjoy reading By Reason of Insanity. In fact, I'm keeping one copy for myself to read again very soon. ENJOY

I didn't get too far into this. It was good but I couldn't stand that there were no breaks. The story read like one long paragraph. That made it very difficult to follow. Maybe if another addition is edited differently I would get it.

this is such a good book. I could not put it down and when I did I would think about it all day until I could pick it up again. You must read this book.

SHANE sTEVENS'S MASTERPIECE HAS NEVER BEEN SURPASSED. it is, quite simply, the best novel of mass murder written in our generation. It is yhe standard by which all the others must be judged.
