A serial killer is on the loose who murders whole families. The only hope of stopping him rests in the hands of two men...a detective who can put himself in the mind of a killer and a serial-killing cannibal who he locked away. This is the first appearance of Hannibal Lecter and it's a good one! This book got me into suspense thrillers and it's still one of the best. It's hard to put this book down.

Scarey, scarey, SCAREY! I'm not into Horror, but Harris grabs you and just doesn't let go. This is not one for the faint of heart. (The movie did justice to the book, by the way.)

In the realm of psychological suspense, Thomas Harris stands alone. Exploring both the nature of human evil and the nerve-racking anatomhy of forensic investigation, Harris unleashes a frightening vision of the dark side of our well-lighted world. In this extraordinary novel, which preceded The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal, Harris introduced the unforgettable character, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. And in it, Will Graham-the FBI man who hunted Lector down-risks his sanity and his life to dual a killer called the.. Red Dragon.

Lying on a cot in his cell with Alexandre Dumas's Le Grand Dictionnaire de Cuisine open on his chest, Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter makes his debut in this legendary horror novel, which is even better than its sequel, The Silence of the Lambs. As in Silence, the pulse-pounding suspense plot involves a hypersensitive FBI sleuth who consults psycho psychiatrist Lecter for clues to catching a killer on the loose.

The sleuth, Will Graham, actually quit the FBI after nearly getting killed by Lecter while nabbing him, but fear isn't what bugs him about crime busting. It's just too creepy to get inside a killer's twisted mind. But he comes back to stop a madman who's been butchering entire families. The FBI needs Graham's insight, and Graham needs Lecter's genius. But Lecter is a clever fiend, and he manipulates both Graham and the killer at large from his cell.

That killer, Francis Dolarhyde, works in a film lab, where he picks his victims by studying their home movies. He's obsessed with William Blake's bizarre painting The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun, believing there's a red dragon within him, the personification of his demonic drives. Flashbacks to Dolarhyde's terrifying childhood and superb stream-of-consciousness prose get us right there inside his head. When Dolarhyde does weird things, we understand why. We sympathize when the voice of the cruel dead grandma who raised and crazed him urges him to mayhem--she's way scarier than that old bat in Psycho. When he falls in love with a blind girl at the lab, we hope he doesn't give in to Grandma's violent advice.

This book is awesomely detailed, ingeniously plotted, judiciously gory, and fantastically imagined. If you haven't read it, you've never had the creeps. -

In some ways this is my favorite Lector book. Thomas Harris was the first author to explore. the FBIs research into the minds of serial killers and the resultant profiling - this book is the result. All the rest of the serial killer books followed this one. Harris didn't get everything right, but he got enough right to make a thrilling tale.

A thriller novel that can be slow at times, but is overall entertaining. I would have liked to have a little more content with Hannibal Lecter; he makes short appearances throughout and is a fascinating but underutilized character (in my opinion).

I was sitting alone in my father's living room going through the books on his shelves when I came across Red Dragon.
I knew Nothing about the book or it's soon to be(it was a while ago) very famous author.
I started reading it while sitting cross legged on the wooden floor.
And I couldn't put it down !!!
This is in my opinion the BEST of Harris's books which include some famous ones including Silence of the Lambs.
The story hangs on a sad loner who works in a photo developing place and whose main hobby is pumping iron.
Demented and strong, he finds happy families by culling through the photos he develops. Then he go's out there and hacks them all(sparing no one, not even the pets) to death.
Some how, in his warped mind, every time he does this it is one step closer to his metamorphosis as a Red Dragon.
So they bring the best FBI guy to solve this type of case. One who has had many of these and is able to empathize by putting himself in the killer's place. This does not do a lot for his own peace of mind but it does make him highly effective.
Fantastic Read . Keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole way.
My Highest Recommendation !!

Predictable; It starts off strongly but it eventually falls into some pretty predictable plot lines for this genre. I don\'t know if its because Red Dragon has inspired other books or if Harris was pulling from the same sources that the other books pulled from too.
