In the 1990s,Cynthia Smith wrote five books on her character Emma Rhodes, an upper class amateur sleuth-for-hire, who is beautiful, intelligent, well dressed, witty, knows all the right people, etc. The books have been reprinted and there are older copies around.

I assure you she is not the disheveled Columbo type. You think you would hate her but you don't. Her observations on the upper classes, including the English aristocracy, are very enjoyable. And she takes on cases involving them that are intriguing.

As this is the last of the series, I suggest you read them in order starting with "Nobless Oblige." However that is not necessary and I read this one second as I wanted to read her observations about Russia. The book was published in 1998, the year that I visited the country. I stayed at a hotel written about in the book and she described it exactly as I remembered.

If you are looking for a fun read with a good plot, try the Emma Rhodes series. I believe Royals and Rogues is my favorite of the five.
