Samael Aun Weor (March 6, 1917 — December 24, 1977), born Víctor Manuel Gómez Rodríguez, Colombian citizen and later Mexican, was an author, lecturer and founder of the 'Universal Christian Gnostic Movement' whose roots may be considered somewhat close to occultism and esotericism. In his over sixty books and hundreds of held conferences, he describes a teaching called "Gnosis", the Greek word for "knowledge", from which is derived the name "Gnosticism", designating a sectarian syncretism which appeared at the beginning of the Christian Era and was considered heresy by the Church Fathers. Some authors however consider this form of Gnosticism occurring towards the later half of the 20th Century as neo-Gnostic while others see it as a development of consciousness by the attainment of a certain sacred lore through the practice of specific techniques.
