Author: Anisha Lakhani
"By turns dishy, delightful, and hilarious, Anisha Lakhani's debut novel is also a biting teach and tell. Required reading!" — --Claire Cook, author of Summer Blowout, Life's a Beach, and Must Love Dogs"You're making how much an hour?" — "Two hundred dollars." — "Do you ride in on...  more »

All she wants to do is teach. For Anna Taggert, an earnest Ivy League graduate, pursuing her passion as a teacher means engaging young hearts and minds. She longs to be in a place where she can be her best self, and give that best to her students.

Turns out it isn't that easy.

Landing a job at an elite private school in Manhattan, Anna finds her dreams of chalk boards and lesson plans replaced with board families, learning specialists, and benefit-planning mothers. Not to mention the grim realities of her small paycheck.

And then comes the realization that the papers she grades are not the work of her students, but of their high-priced, college-educated tutors. After uncovering this underground economy where a teacher can make the same hourly rate as a Manhattan attorney, Anna herself is seduced by lucrative offers--one after another. Teacher by day, tutor by night, she starts to sample the good life her students enjoy: binges at Barneys, dinners at the Waverly Inn, and a new address on Madison Avenue.

Until, that is, the truth sets in.

Anna Taggert is a young teacher starting her first teaching job at a Manhattan private school with visions of making a difference in her students' lives. It isn't long before she has her eyes opened to the reality of her students' priviledged upbringing, where no one does their own work, and every student has their own highly-paid tutor.

Anna soon joins the ranks of the private tutors herself, enticed by the huge sums of money and the luxuries such money can buy. Now she has a new best friend, a high-end apartment, status handbags, blond highlights, and a wardrobe to rival any wealthy Manhattan socalite. But has she sold herself out, abandonded not only her old self, but her morals as well?

I really enjoyed this novel. I did not find the brand name-dropping to be annoying at all - it wasn't any different than your average chick lit novel. This was a very readable story, and a fast read. It was fun to read about Anna's experiences with her tutoring students, even if it was hard to believe they were only 7th and 8th graders for the most part.

Overall, an entertaining story that I'd recommend to anyone who enjoys a bit of chick lit now and then.

p.s. I'm not sure why this is listed as a Young Adult novel, as it is most definitely an adult novel, with adult themes and language.

A quick read chic lit book that pans the first year of a new teacher with a degree from Columbia University. She initially takes the job because of her love of teaching but becomes enthralled with the idea of shopping, living in a posh apartment, and dressing even better than her snob moms. How does she do all this on a teacher's salary in a private school.....read on as the author takes you on a fictional journey in a private school where the parents dictate how much homework their precious children should be given.

This was an easy read. At times funny and a bit sassy. The reason I rated it a bit lower is because I had a hard time personally relating to the main character. She is a confusion of greediness mixed with a heart to teach (which I guess is the whole premis for the book,eh). It's one of those cases where the moral of the story is wrapped up in the last two chapters and the whole rest of it I sorta disliked her! A bit "Clueless" meets "Nanny Diaries" meets "Shopaholic".

Nanny Diaries meets Devil Wears Prada meets Gossip Girl.
