Reacher, stranded in the bitter cold of winter in South Dakota, finds himself in the middle of an international and historical confluence of forces. Betrayal, murder, brutality and introspection (REACHER?) move rapidly to a very different and explosive ending. A great read.

Funny, original and politcally incorrect.
Once again, Scalzi hits a winner. Thinking out of the box as he does so well, this tale of interspecies intregue and political manipulations gone wrong reaffirms Scalzi's reputation as one of the brightest writers on the sf horizon.

Crashing Through: A True Story of Risk, Adventure and the Man Who Dared to See
Review Date: 4/11/2008
Helpful Score: 2

Well written account of the daring life of Mike Mays, blinded at three years of age and the challenges he faced when offered the opportunity to see again forty years later. Not your usual biography. Reads like a novel.
Also read Shadow Divers by the same author.

Well done fantasy - good start to a trilogy - some familiar themes but, overall, a worthwhile effort.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, Bk 1)
Review Date: 11/2/2009
Helpful Score: 1

This is an original work with singular characters and clearly drawn settings. The interplay between the protagonists is fresh and the 'cold case' they set out to solve is compelling. Stark and realistic, violent and passionate, a page-tuner whose 500+ pages end too soon. This is a wonderful read.

I'm not sure that this is truly in the fantasy genre at all. Speculative fiction about theocracies in the future seem more relevant with our current crop of jihadists and fundamentalists.
The story is tightly wound and cutting. Scalzi does not follow anyone mold here and he is willing, as ever, to take risks.
There is a lingering aftertaste, an itch to discuss this book that is quite strong and an inducement to share it with friends to get their take.
The word of the story prompts a good question..."To whom?"

This is a really wonderful, character driven story. Smithy's journey across America will one you remember long after you close the cover.
Note: there is SOME wear on this copy but I believe it meets the criteria for posting.

Very disturbing vision of an alternative America - What if the US had not entered WWII and Lindbergh elected president in place of FDR.

This reads like a novel. Intense, suspenseful and well paced, Kurson keeps the unknown submarine's mysterious origins in the dark for the length of the tale. Highly recommended.
