Extremely interesting American history and the author develops memorable characters. I highly recommend this (long) book.

I didn't give it much of a chance. I read about 30-40 pages and thought the woman sounded like a whiney baby. Personally, I'm not into guru stuff either, and that did turn me off.
Hopefully, someone will really get the good of it, as I put it right back on the paperbackswap website yesterday :)

Reading this book has increased my understanding of Harlem life for the little black kid John. Baldwin's minutely detailed descriptions of a black family are now marked on my memory forever. I think about that family and the portion that each member brought to the book's table.
As so well explained by Baldwin, the spirit of God is felt in widely differing ways. The culture that Baldwin's Harlem family is steeped in has formed John's view so vividly that I can SEE his dilemma: ..."John could not bow before the throne of grace without first kneeling to his father. On his refusal to do this had his life depended, and John's secret heart had flourished in its wickedness until the day his sin first overtook him."

You really must read this book. Anyone who loves Marge Piercy will rate the caliber of her story telling as "Tops".
I learned a lot about Jewish culture and religion from He, She and It. But here's what is most important about the book: Marge Piercy knows how to relate true devotion of one being for another. Yod's devotion to Shira is remarkable. I have given the book an AKA title: 'You Were Programmed to Love Me'.

This is an interesting read. I took a Vietnam War History class a few years back, and this was required reading. A lot of background went into our involvement with Vietnam. I strongly recommend the book to you history buffs.

Fascinating book. Great read for young folks and us oldies as well. Truly a "different" way to look at "time". Is time in a line? After reading this wonderful book, I say no, time is circular. We go back to it, we live in it, and we experience something far far ahead...when all along, time is really now.
