A researcher at the top of his field, Bernard Hamilton explores with a clarity and intellect sometimes scarce in historical treatises like this one the various and oftentimes confusing world of late 12th century Jerusalem and the politics of the court of Baldwin IV. A must read for anyone interested in the Third Crusade.

I am a huge fan of both Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey Maturin novels as well as C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower series, and I went into reading Kent's books with what you might call high expectations. While they were well written and certainly well researched, I didn't find them nearly as entertaining as O'Brian's novels or as readable as Forester's. Furthermore, after reading the first three books in this 29 book series, I didn't really feel any connection with the main character Richard Bolitho. If you're looking for a follow-up for O'Brian's books, I guess this is it, but it doesn't come highly recommended by me.

A beautiful capstone on a truly inspiring and at times hilarious trio of memoirs. With each volume, Frank McCourt shows his readers how much he (and the world around him) change and grow, allowing for lots of laughs and sympathy from his audience. This book is best read out loud, especially chapter six, which is all about the fine art of excuse note writing and how he turns it into a lesson for his belligerent high school students. A must-read for anyone who has been or is thinking about becoming a teacher.

One of my favorite productions by the BBC, To Serve Them All My Days is even better in print. The adventures of young Welshman David Powlett-Jones as he returns from serving on the front lines of World War One and begins a new adventure as a history teacher at Bamfylde are a must read for any one who has either been a teacher themselves or is thinking of going into the teaching profession. Mr. Powlett-Jones and his students will make you laugh, cry, and in general, thoroughly enjoy yourself.

I absolutely LOVE this book and wouldn't part with my copy for the world. It is the go-to volume for all things Victorian. Well worth actually buying if you're interested in that period.
