Even though this a young adult book, it is a great read for any age. I loved Maud from page one! She is spunky but so in need of love. Reads fast for 400 pages.

I really liked this book. The author really made New York in 1840 come to life. I was hesitant at first with the main character being Edgar Allen Poe. I am a big fan of his, but I wasn't sure the author could make him into a likable hero. I was surprised at the good job he did. Even though it is fiction, I think my view of what sort of man Poe might have been has changed.

If you liked The Alienist by Caleb Carr, you'll like this one. Captures Colonial New York City in the early 18th century. This is a sequel to Speaks the Nightbird. I would read that first, but I enjoyed this more. The plot is complex yet the author ties everything together in the end and leaves it open for another book.
