Fascinating story about the father of the author of The Count of Monte Cristo. From Haiti and half black but descended from nobility, he served with distinction in the French army. Along the way the author brings you up to speed on French history. Highly recommend.

The author deftly weaves the story of his life as a foreign correspondant with that of his cat. Very funny too. Not done reading but I love this book.

This was a lovely book. Their family experienced tragedy but they bonded over the cat. Wonderful story if you like cat or animal stories.

For those saying it's too dry, I say try the audio version. I borrowed it online rom my library with the Overdrive media app. Regardless, I found this a very well researched and informative read. I hadnt realized the time span between the she met Caesar and she killed herself was almost 20 years. Schiff does a great job going to original sources yet making this entertaining.

The writer's alcoholic father relocated her, her mother and older sister to the Dominican Republic in 1946 to farm coconuts. Unusual setting in a different time. Her sister is lost to the family for several years. Her love and longing to be closers to her sister came through very strongly.

Great read about a foreign correspondent who decides to move back home to New York with her Dutch husband. The only fairly central location they can afford is West Harlem in a run down area.

The author finds that one of the few career options for women is as a hair stylist. She opens a beauty school in Kabul. She's not a saint but you can tell the money some of the women in the book start bringing in money make a difference for their families and how they are treated. Overall a great read.

Humorously written story about how her cat disappeared, and her efforts to figure out where he was going. He casually reappeared after five weeks, coat shony and well fed. Cute illustrations. There is an especially funny part towards the end. Warning, there is one sad incident towards the end of the book.

I've seen erector sets but never thought much about them. This is the story of the man who invented them and a bit about the history of the first half of the 20th century.

Pen Farthing was stationed with the British forces in Afghanistan. He rescued a fighting dog from an Afghan stayed inside his compound. He went to great lengths to keep it and the other strays that accumulated fed and from freezing. He's back in England with his girlfriend. They now have an Afghan dog rescue foundation. There's a surprise ending. If you like animal stories this is for you.
