Not as good as Grisham, but a yarn spun along the same genre lines. Unfortunately, the key to the mystery is given away in the first few pages. I admit that it is a page-turner, and I read it in just a few days, but it certainly does not pass for good literature. May be a good beach read if you are so inclined.

One should take note that this is an abridged edition.

The author takes a fresh approach casting the bad guy as the protagonist. You will want him to prevail. Imaginative twists in character relationships move the plot forward to its (arguably) inevitable conclusion. Characters, even minor ones, are so well drawn that you will have a real visual image of each of them. Gangsta language may be a bit hard to digest, but you will get the gist. Highly recommended for fans of hard core crime fiction.

Prepare! One chapter flows into the next, and before you know it, it's 3AM.

So hallucination-prone Sasha Solomon just happens to have degrees in psychotherapy and Chinese, and is pursuing a career in PR in a small town in New Mexico. That's just too much of a stretch for me.

I thought this book would turn out to be just another cozy. A poor but resourceful and curious independent woman sets out to make her way among the stuffy English upper class. And of course there is the obligatory counterpoint with an interesting male. But then I noticed the intelligent writing style, the sprinkling of historical characters (like Oscar Wilde and Sir Conan Doyle), and a strong sense of place, time and popular culture in the late nineteenth century. The plot is complex, although I did figure out whodunit fairly early on. I eagerly begin my search for Book 2 in the series.

Much darker than the Jane Austen series, and it took me until about Chapter Ten before I was completely hooked. Set in the Victorian Era (not my own personal favorite), duplicity and suspicion motivate all but the idealistic protagonists, FitzGerald and Armistead. Good will out with plenty of untied loose ends for sequels, I will once again await Stephanie Barron's next installments!

Chock full of short mysteries featuring such beloved characters as Brother Cadfael, Sister Fidelma, Sherlock Holmes and many more. An ideal bedside reader.

On the positive side, this was an absorbing read with sympathetic protagonists. On the down side, too many subplots created one-dimensional characters, many with no apparent motivation.

Not Grisham's usual courtroom procedural, but quite possibly his best work. The ring of truth asserts itself as Grisham describes a biographical boyhood in the deep South. A worthy read, and most likely his best contribution to literature ever.

When a priest is murdered, suspicion falls a newly arrived priest who has begun working in Brother Cadfael's herb garden. Cadfael's search to find the real killer demonstrates Ellis Peters's masterful intricacy of detail, plot, and characterization.

Set in 1935, this hard-boiled mystery has the flavor of Mickey Spillane. Jim Locke, a crime-beat reporter, is the prime suspect in his sister's murder. He must find a way to prove his innocence before a corrupt New York cop with a vendetta arrests him - or worse. The action moves from New York to Key West where Ernest Hemingway becomes a central figure, just as a giant hurricane bears down on the Keys. This book is hard to put down, and it kept me up late reading until the final page.

Lizzy is not equal to Stephanie Plum in pure laugh-out-loud humor, but still a quick sometimes amusing read. Throw together the usual mix of zany characters, a convoluted plot, and titillating sexual tension, and there you have. I've Wish Listed the second installment, so I guess I'm sucked in once again.
