From Back cover:

She had to get married.

However violently Darcy opposed her stepfather George, he would control her business and family until she married or turned twenty-five. When he cast a lustful eye on her younger sister Tessa, Darcy's choice was clear.

It no longer mattered if she loved her friend Evan the way a wife should love a husband. He'd proposed repeatedly. Now she would accept.

But Evan's older brother, Miles, had conflicting ideas about Darcy's future when she turned up in Florida. "Evan has never thought clearly when it came to you," he said dangerously. "So I've decided for him."

Debut novel in Silhouette Nocturne's new Valorian Chronicles. Based on a CSI-like crime unit in Necropolis, a city of vampires, werewolves, witches, and who-knows-what, disguised as a restricted army base near San Antonio, Texas.

Vivi Anna has fun giving us the details of crime scene analysis, paranormal style. Crime Unit leader Caine Valorian tries to find a serial killer while hampered by vampire politicians who force him to accept a temporary addition to his edgy team. Eve Grant is eager to succeed but must deal with almost complete ignorance of the Other World, suspicious and frightening team-mates and a powerful attraction to her vampire boss.

A fun start. Be prepared to buy the next book because this story clearly is not over.

2nd in a marvelous series. Main story follows Navy SEAL John Nilsson's attempts to help Meg Moore in multiple hostage situations. Romantic, sexy, fast-paced, and affecting. Also, sub-plots set in World War II and the beginning of the Sam Starrett-Alyssa Locke romance (yum).

from BACK COVER:
Her assignment was reasonably straightforward. At least that's what Coralie Rhodes--working under the name of Lee Roman--expected. She was to go to Bermuda and interview an industrial tycoon.

But that was before she met the tycoon--and more importantly, it was before she met his nephew, Jordan Colyer.

Eight years ago, Jordan Colyer had made his hatred and disgust of her quite clear--and although he didn't seem to recognize her now, it would only be a matter of time. And time was what she didn't have....

from INSIDE COVER:

Lee's heart stood still as she recognized him.

Every instinct told her to run. But there was no way to escape without looking totally undignified.

Dreading that he would realize who she was at close quarters, she watched his approach. But he was smiling lazily down at her, seeing only a woman he wanted to meet, instead of the girl he had hated so much eight years before.

He said softly, "Are you as enamored with this party as you look?" Amusement laced a deep rich voice that set her nerves tingling. "Because if you are, you're in good company." A Canadian accent--resonant, subtle. "And as we're clearly in the minority here--" wryly he directed a glance to Vince and his companions moving sinuously to the pulsing music "--I think we should stick together, don't you?"

Lee and Trevor had been best friends for since college. Now she wanted to add sex to the mix. Trevor thought it was too awkward, too tempting...and what if it was too good? What about their friendship then? And what if ONE of them fell in love...?
Great chemistry and believable waffling before the big moment. The group of college friends is reminiscent of TV show Friends but don't let that influence you too much. I read it several years ago but the elevator scene still pops into my mind from time to time.

On the whole, the attraction between shy, reserved Anne and wealthy businessman Nicholas Thayer keeps this story going. Convinced by Nick to pose as his mistress solely to help get backing for her 'real' love's art gallery, Anne gradually learns that passion is not to be avoided at all costs, despite the trauma of a childhood spent in a commune with her free-loving parents. While the book kept my interest, I was uncomfortable with the depth of Nick's obsession with his brother's sexpot wife and felt that it continued much too late in the story, no matter how explained in the end.

Closer to romantic suspense than most Harlequin Presents books. Many HPs make you want to yell, "snap out of it," because the hero and heroine's blindness to the other's motives is infuriating. But Verity, a strong likeable heroine, has believable reasons not to trust the enigmatic Sebastian Kent despite her growing attraction to him.

Four stories of paranormal romance, set in Mysteria, Colorado, a town which had been accidentally founded by a random act of demonic kindness. The tales of seduction include "Alone Wolf" by MaryJanice Davidson,"Mortal in Mysteria" by Susan Grant,"Candy Cox and the Big Bad (Were)wolf" by P C Cast, and "The Witches of Mysteria and the Dead Who Love them" by Gena Showalter. Although they are all sexy, the tales are an uneven mix, in spite of the connecting location and theme.

from back cover:
NAME: RICARDO ESTEBAN AMADEO SANTOS
DATE OF BIRTH: 1459 DATE OF DEATH: 1492 DATE OF REBIRTH: 1492
OCCUPATION: IMMORTAL GUARDIAN
Reborn moments after Queen Isabella of Spain ordered her lover's death, Santos accepted eternal life in exchange for protecting humanity. For centuries, he's kept himself secluded in a hillside mansion. But all that changes one night when he takes in a woman who claims to have seen him in a vision.

A dire prediction has convinced Erin Brady she will be murdered on her thirtieth birthday--and that Santos is the only man who can help her. Unwittingly drawn to the beauty who can read his thoughts and heart like no one ever has, Santos realizes she is his Destined Mate. And with the threat of her imminent extinction ticking like a time bomb, Santos suddenly has something worth dying...and worth living for.

This is an enjoyable book and, according reviews on amazon.com, better than the first in the Guardians series from Nocturne. I have not read Eternally, so can't comment.

Although there are a number of lovely (and hopefully carefully researched) Spanish phrases, the English was not so carefully edited. There is more than one instance of the verb 'lie' being used incorrectly in the narrative.

from BACK COVER:

Kirtie had gone to considerable trouble.

Her plot just had to succeed? She would abduct Francis Grayson and dump the attractive businessman on a remote mountain in Vermont. And she'd leave him there until her elder sister Louise was safely married.

But Kirstie hadn't made any allowance for Francis's quick recovery or his resourcefulness.

Nor had it once crossed her mind that she might be just as susceptible to Francis's lethal charms as Louise....

from INSIDE COVER:

"This isn't right." Kirstie forced the words out.

The balcony, the air, even the birds were still as he asked very quietly, "Why isn't it?"

"This--this preoccupation," she began.

"Quite an interesting euphemism," he said.

The mocking, angry taunt was so accurate and it hurt. Her eyes flashed fire at him. "Would you prefer that I call it a corrosive obsession?" she lashed out, aware from his face that she'd given every bit as much hurt as she had sustained.

"If we sink into this we won't be dealing with issues, we will be ignoring basic problems. Louise--"

She was too wrapped up in her own agitation to notice how silken his voice had gone as he said very quietly, "Ah, yes, Louise."

from the back cover: On a calm moonlit night, as the scent of jasmine and pine embraces the island of Ascension, the pirate prince Lazar di fiore returns with lethal grace to avenge what was stolen from him: his kingdom, his birthright, his soul... When Allegra Monteverdi, the daughter of Lazar's sworn enemy, throws herself on his mercy, Lazar agrees to spare the lives of her family--but only if Allegra sails away with him as his captive.
The first and best book in her Ascension trilogy. Loved the hero.

from BACK COVER:

She was supremely confident in business.

Gabrielle had built up a successful business empire single-handedly. She positively thrived on challenge and stress.

Personal affairs were another matter. Handling Saul O'Connor when he resurfaced in her life after an eight-year gap was a different ball game entirely. Whenever Saul was around she seemed incapable of handling anything. Her usual composure deserted her.

"The past is gone, Gabyy," he told her. But it wasn't that easy for her to forget what he had once meant to her--and still did.

from INSIDE COVER:

"The hatchet man strikes again."

Saul's jaw tightened at her words. "Not you, too. Okay, the press gets hysterical, but you must know that there's no room for sentiment in business. I admit people suffer--and I go through hell, too--but often it's the only way."

Gabrielle's look chopped him into little pieces. Whoever lost out in a deal with Saul O'Connor, she was sure it would never be him.

"In other words, you've made a career out of being ruthless," she accused curtly.

"Haven't you ever wondered if your view of the past could be faulty?" he demanded as he pulled the car up outside her offices. "That maybe I was not entirely the big bad wolf?"

"Never." She used the word as incisively as a surgeon would use a scalpel.

Quite enjoyable.

From back cover:

Burying the past gave birth to the future

Gaby returned to Shorelands, the ancestral home of her youth, to make peace with Justin's memory. She had to put thoughts of her childhood sweetheart behind her before marrying Harry.

Gaby didn't expect to run afoul of a man who had the power to obliterate both men from her mind. Callum Durrand, Justin's illegitimate brother, was now the owner of everything she'd ever loved and the man she'd have to fight if she wanted to gain control of her own home.

Somehow, though, whenever she came into contact with Callum, her thoughts just wouldn't turn to battle....

and from inside cover:

"You're not safe on your own."

Callum finished sticking on the plaster and let go of her hand. "Haven't you got a boyfriend to take care of you?"

"If I can survive the hazards of the day," Gary told him cathingly, with a look that left no doubt she was referring to him, "the nights aren't likely to hold any terrors."

His big hand under her chin forced her face up to his. "Don't tempt me, Gaby," he said threateningly, "to show you how much of a hazard I can really be."

Gaby pushed his hand away contemptuously. "Don't play the squire with me, Callum Durrand. You're a fake, and I'm used to the real thing."

But when Gaby saw the flame flicker in his eyes, she wished she'd held her tongue.

Please don't request this book and then complain about too much sex. Hello, people! The subtitle is "The Best in Women's Romantic Erotica."

Some volumes of this series are better than others, so you might want to look at the admiring customer reviews on amazon as well as the complaints. In the end, enjoyment depends on the reader's attitude almost as much as the skill of the writer.

I especially liked Lisa Marie Rice's "Secluded," which starts with the cliche situation of being sold-to-rich-man-to-pay-her-father's-debts and spins a story which is erotic and romantic. The former mobster hero needs rescuing even more than the heroine. There's an unusual Tarzan fantasy which may work for you. More enjoyable to me was "Wanted" by Kimberly Dean in which has FBI Special Agent Jeff Reno hot on the trail of suspected traitor Danielle Carver.

Sensual and romantic story about an unusual and very likeable pair--Samantha the surfer and Jack the basketball star. They both thought they were commitment-phobic. Sam won't be rushed. Of course her attempts to delay what she saw as the inevitable end of their fling by postponing getting in bed have unforeseen results. Sexy dates on the weekend and steamy phone conversations during the week heighten the sexual tension between Sam and Jack. But they also have the time to get to know each other....

Here's a taste.

From the inside cover:

"Sam, what are you doing to me?"

Hopefully driving him half a wild as he was driving her. With Jack standing so close, cupping her face with his big hands, avoiding a dance had become the last thing on her mind. "I should mention--" Sam sank her teeth into his earlobe, thrilling to the sound that dragged from him"--it's been a little too long for me. I'm liking this way too much."

"Don't tell me that." His hand skimmed up her back, while the other rested on her hip. His thumb glided over her belly, then moved upward, stroking each rib as it climbed. He traced her last rib, then just barely touched the bottom curve of her breast.

All the while his gaze held her, conveying hunger, passion, desire...more heady than the champagne she'd sipped. She let out a shuddery breath.

Then his thumb made another sweep, not quite touching her nipple, and she had to concentrate on breathing.

Sinking her fingers into his hair, she brought his mouth back to hers, and their moans mingled, becoming part of the crazy, wild kiss.

Second book in an excellent new series. Just as good or better than Tiger Eye. (It is a stand-alone story but I highly recommend reading Tiger Eye first.) Elena Baxter heals with her mind. Artur Loginov is a Russian emigre who can read minds, shape-shift, and start fires. They are captured for their talents, cornered, isolated & caged. Their love story starts in their sleep a dream of a face, a brush of a mind, the hint of a kiss, and finally, at long last a shadow touch. They join forces to escape. Very romantic and full of action.
