I loved this book and could barely put it down. It did contain some spoilers for the books that are on the list of perfect murders, but overall I thought it was a great read with good twists and turns. This is the first book I've read by the author, and now I want to check out his other books.

As another reviewer put it, this story has everything: drama, murder, mystery, romance, war. And it's all true! As usual, Massie manages to distill Russian history into an intriguing narrative. I couldn't put this book down, and I feel that I came away from it with a much better understanding of Russian and early Soviet history.

Excellent - gives you a sense not just of the substance of the Nuremberg trials but of the personalities of those who participated and their own private dramas.

Very well written with a great explanation of why France allowed itself to be occupied and what life was like under the occupation. It did, however, fall short in its discussion of how the Vichy government fell and how the French dealt with those they considered collaborationists (for example, the women whose heads were shaved, the trials of Vichy officials, etc.)
