This is another exciting thriller about Jack Reacher. It explains the reasons he left the service. A long book but well worth the read. Gives more background on some of the people mentioned in previous books. He is a cold blooded killer, though you can't help but like him. His is justified killing (however still wrong!).

This is an exciting mystery in a series about a state trooper, Bobby Dodge, who is a sniper. He is called to check out a domestic violence situation and his life becomes chaos after that. I am on the second in the series, "Hide", and it just gets better.

This is a story told by Martha (Patsy) Jefferson about her life with her father, Thomas Jefferson, and her husband and family. The story begins in France where Thomas Jefferson is a diplomat to France and Patsy is about 14 or 15. There she makes a life long friend, William Short. It tells about their life when they return to Monticello, the plantation that Thomas Jefferson designed. He is also the founder of the University of VA. She marries Tom Randolph who becomes a Governor of VA. I think this book would be enjoyed by young adult readers as well as adult.

This is a compelling story of how the friendship and eventually love came about between Joy Davidman and C.S. Lewis. The first contact was Joy writing to C.S. Lewis asking about spiritual advice. They spend several years writing letters before they finally met. She was from the US and he was from England. So they were oceans apart. Reading this book makes me want to read the works of C.S. Lewis.

This is a story about 2 couples and how they relate to each other. One husband is having an affair with the wife of the other couple. Nothing really interesting in this book. I was looking forward to it as I loved "The Orphan Train". It was a disappointment.

Wonderful mystery in the 1950's about a mysterious woman told by the detective Philip Marlowe and the spell she had on him. Fun read.

This was an interesting story of an injured vet who comes to Ashville, NC, to recover from hs injury. He was in investigater in the military and he gets involved in solving a crime that happened many years ago. This is the first novel in the series and I will be anxious to read the next one.

This book takes place in Germany in 1795 in a well to do family. It is the story of a young college student who falls in love with a 12 year old girl and covers a period of about 3 years. It gives a feel of the times and customs but is very slow moving. If it was a long book I would probably not finished it.

This is the best book I have read in a long time. It is the story of a young foster girl who comes to live with a family in Berlin in 1940s. It is about her adjustment to living with this family, the tragic things that come into her life, her love for reading, and the bond she forms with the foster family and others in the community. There is a lot of tragic happenings in the book. It brings to life how the ordinary German cannot do much, if anything, to help those in trouble, but many try facing difficulties themselves. Death tells the story so at first it seems a little odd, but then you see the story and Death's amazement at the strength of humans. The movie comes out on Netflick in April.

This is a wonderful story of a woman who goes into the hills of Kentucky to bring books on loan from the library to people who otherwise would not be able to get books to read. She forms relationships with the people she brings books to. The was a Roosevelt program in 1930s.

Each book by this author get better. Each one is about a different crime investigator with his personal story as well as the crime story. This crime story is about a family who was killed in their home with only the mother surviving. The detective feels that the person who admitted to the crime did not do it. Why did he confess? An unusual story set in Ireland.

This is a wonderful read about the life and times in the 1950s East End of London. Included in the stories of babies being delivered are the customs, home life, attitudes of life among the people and among the nun house where the midwives live. The writer also tells of the changes in her own life, how the nuns affected her with their devotion and belief in God, and her love of her profession and for the people. A compelling read. Would love to read more about her work.

This is a delightful book of short stories. The stories are all centered around people who live on Chestnut Street in Dublin, Ireland at different times. Each story is about hope, love, new decisions, trials, etc. You just love all the characters. Maeve Binchy has a way of making characters come to life with each one having a different personality.

This is the story of a German woman in 1943 Berlin who reluctantly gets into hiding Jews from the Nazis. It tells a lot about how hard it was for the German people during the final stages of the war and their general lack of faith in each other. It was kind of a tell on each other society (including family)to get in good with the Nazi regime. Many of the people seemed cold-hearted. War was hard on the common people. I did not like some of the sexual situations, but otherwise recommend it.

This is a delightful book written in verse rather than prose in the way it is displayed in the book, but reads like prose - not rhyming words. It is a short and quick read about the struggles of a teen-age girl whose mother has a mental illness, back in the '60's when there was little information out about it. It is an honest forthcoming book about her feelings and confusions and is based on the author's true life. It is considered a youth book but great for adults, too. I highly recommend it.

Interesting story about 2 couples and their devotion to their spouses and each other. The writer gives good destriptions of the areas where the scenes take place. This book is slow going at times. The ladies in my book club really enjoyed it.

This is a wonderful mystery about an undertaker who lives in the NC mountains. He is the kind of undertaker who cares about the family of those who died. The characters are believable and so is the mystery. This is not a shoot-em' up kind of mystery. The undertaker is a former police officer from Charlotte, NC, who moves back to the mountains to help his parents run the funeral business. What is also great about this book is that there are just enough characters to keep track of and the book isn't too long. The book has a family of characters who most likely will be in succeeding books. I will want to read the rest of the books in this series.

I enjoy the Quirke series of books. This is about the murder of a wealthy man and the mystery surrounding it. The characters in this story weren't as likable as most. I didn't like this one as much as the others.

This is a wonderful memoir of a young couple who begin their first year of farming in upstate New York. Their idea is to get people in the community to buy into their farm (pay a fee). For this fee they will provide most all the food a family could need - vegetables, meats, herbs, eggs, dairy (and all that comes from that). They use no fertilizers or bug spray. It is the story of all the hard work of farming and the rewards. The fee the members give pays for equipment, seeds, etc. A wonderful idea - I loved the book.
