I only made it half way through this book and have now reposted it. In short, the title is accurate. The author is a professor of Geography in New Zealand, and the story follows a long journey of a small group of adventurers "Across the Face of the World." While the long journey is a tried and true literary vehicle, this one was unexciting. The characters saw lots of natural sights, and the plot developed a bit, but overall I didn't much care about the characters or the story. It was too much about the face of the world and too little about telling a good story.

A good entertaining fantasy book with a slightly-different-than-usual style. (though the later books in the series are not too different, and do get old, I stopped reading at #3)

Although I enjoyed the first book in this series, they seem to have gone slowly downhill. I did finish this one (#3) but I don't think I'll get any more.

Surprisingly fun. I'm always wary of books that tout reviews from the "Romantic Times" but I hoped it was more of an adventure story, and indeed it was entirely an adventure story just with the usual roles reversed - a female lead, and a male love interest.

Combo book containing the first two books in the quartet. While the first book is good reading, the second is so-so. I don't plan to read the rest in the series.

Terrible. A mediocre story full of long explanations of a complicated and nonsensical magic system. Unfortunately, this magic system, and the problems associated with certain evil magikers, forms the basis for the whole story.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this series. The first book was the best, but it was worthwhile reading the other two to see how the story ended up.

Just doesn't hold together. It's thrilling yes, as the pretty young woman is chased by terrible powers, but there are no likable characters, and the story doesn't hold together.

A good, entertaining book. Not so original after #1, but still worth reading.

If you're new to sci-fi and fantasy, you'll like this book. But if you've read a lot (like me) this will seem like the same-old same-old that you've seen done better before. Once upon a time I loved Alan Dean Foster, but I haven't enjoyed any of his recent books. I wonder if it's him changing or me changing? Perhaps I should go back and reread the Spellsinger series...

Starts out well, but quickly becomes shallow, with lots of plot holes. Perhaps good as a popcorn book for fans of the genre, but not for me.
