He's Scared, She's Scared : Understanding the Hidden Fears That Sabotage Your Relationships
Review Date: 9/12/2009

I bought this book to help me understand a couple of commitphobes I'd been involved with, and was startled to start recognizing myself as a passive commitphobe! Seriously, I was almost having panic attacks--the book was hitting so many "buttons" inside me! The insights of the authors (based on hundreds of interviews) were helpful, especially the last section of the book, which reads like compassionate advice from a worried grandparent.

This is a well-written, engaging, and educational book that provides a real glimpse into Mr. Fox's life. You get a real sense of his personality and his challenges--personally, professionally, emotionally, and spiritually. I was particularly interested in the choices he made at certain crossroads in his life that didn't have anything to do with his illness. I highly recommend it.

One of the most perfect books I've read in a long time. Anyone going through a recent loss of a loved one will appreciate how Andrew Solomon nails the hardest truths in the most beautiful language imaginable.

Strong at the Broken Places: Voices of Illness, a Chorus of Hope
Review Date: 11/26/2011

I really enjoyed this book. Richard Cohen does a great job of letting people speak from their own experience, but he is not afraid to challenge them in certain areas. By the time this book was written, he had known each person for years, and that familiarity and intimacy is reflected in the pages. This book really puts you in the shoes of people with different illnesses and makes you think about not only their experience, but how you might think/feel in their shoes. It is an eye-opening book in terms of the suffering all around us, and how incredibly brave and strong human beings can be. I highly recommend it.

This is a good read. You'll be drawn into these women's stories. That being said, I cared more about some of them than others. At times, I could feel the author's presence. By that I mean, I stopped being inside the characters' world and became aware of what the author was trying to do with the characters. That being said, this book is worth reading and captures certain truths and realities of motherhood quite nicely.
