If you love road racing, dogs, and stories that read realistically, beautifully and are contemporary then you will love this book. It was nothing short of breathtaking. My advice though, do not read the last chapter. It kind of makes the book feel like a "hollywood ending" took over at the editor's desk. The book ends perfectly if the last word you read is "Faster" and you DON'T read the 3 page last chapter titled "Imola, Italy". Read it, and I assure you, you'll regret having done so.

2/20/10: I finished this book today, and was not ready for it to end. From the beginning I was reminded of a story like Harold and Maude - where a young boy is enchanted by an older (though not that old) woman. At times, it made me uncomfortable, but never to the point of making me put the book down. The level of honesty with which Martin approaches his characters should be commended. Believable to the point where I lost myself in the story, and enchanting in too as Martin paints the canvas of our reality and our imagination's reality. The ego,and the alter ego are thoroughly entwined his story-within-a-story approach. A lovely, thought provoking book.

Upon reading this book, I found my new favorite contemporary author. The introspection of the author in a semi-autobiographical fashion really grabbed me. I just had to make it through the first 50 pages, which at times annoyed, and bored slightly. Get through that, and you'll find the gem I did. This is the only piece that takes away 1/2 star for me. It had me laughing, crying, and wanting to throw the book across the room - something I had not felt since reading Pearl S. Buck's book "The Good Earth" in high school. Years ago...

This book was terrible. It was written by someone who has zero command for a creative use of the English language. Repetitive - not very interesting - and not even very racy. If you want to read a book of porn, or a book that caters to the BDSM lifestyle, start somewhere else - ANYWHERE else.
This is one of the most annoying books I have ever had to read (thanks to book club). Read the reviews on www.amazon.com before you dive into this. It just is NOT worth your time - and you'll never get the time you waste reading it back.

This book was heart warming, sad, and simply beautiful. I am always surprised when a female author taps in to the mind of young men, and in this case, brothers of varying ages and desires. I laughed, cried, and read the book in just one day. It is a treasure.

Though I almost lost interest about 1/4 the way through, the book kept me just hooked enough to continue on - and made for a very interesting read. I was surprised by this book - which is something of a rarity. Her writing style keeps your attention, and makes for a great quick read. As an airplane book - I highly recommend it. It captured my attention and made the flight go much more quickly.

Reading this book was a little like venturing back to the 80s while de Lint worked at exploring his writing style. I am never much the fan of an author casting another author as the main character, and this book was no exception. Though I enjoyed the plot line and some of the suspense, I felt the book was somewhat predictable. It was obvious that de Lint was just beginning to explore his style as an author, and I felt the character development was not yet deep enough to truly capture me. It's interesting to look back at de Lint's earlier work since I am such a big fan of the Newford stories and novels he writes (more recent) and the yarns he weaves of characters in this fictional city (Newford) continue to keep me wanting more.
