Laugh out loud funny, informative and clinically sexy. What a hoot. Never disrespectful of the subject or the many characters protrayed in its pages. Science writing without self-importance. How refreshing!

God Awful. No pun intended. Cliched writing, non-suprising plot and misrepresentation of biblical scholarship. Absolutely could not keep reading because the writing was so bad I could have written better prose. This is a sure sign that the writing is horrible.

Simply the best book I've ever read. A big family saga, but so much more. Philosophy, religion, the American dream and so much more about small town life in 20th century California. All wrapped up in a retelling of the story of Adam and Eve. Plus just beautiful writing. I've read it at least three times and will read it again.

Yuck. A tale full of "Heroic Women" in the least interesting sense. Bored me so much I could not really finish it, just skimmed through it.

If you really believe that marriage is a spiritual path this book is for you. Hendrix outlines ways to reinvigorate flagging relationships and encourages the reader to take responsibilitly for their own emotions and issues while cutting their partner some slack. Not all marriages should be saved, but many don't have to fail. This book shows that with compassion, patience and rigorous self examination a relationship can be the ground for spiritual transformation and personal growth.

After loving The Time Traveler's Wife I was eager to read this and was sadly disappointed. I found this book rather charmless, the protagonists unengaging and the end creepily disheartening

This is a gripping page turner of a book and it's beautifully written. I would rate it higher if it hadn't left me feeling frustrated at the characters who stubbornly keep making one mistake after another. Can't say more without giving away plot points. Worth reading for the writing and the insight into the human psyche.

Fun, fun, fun. A big spawling richly detailed and imaginative fantasy of England with magic intact. The footnotes are hilarious and the themes of good, evil, innocence and hubris are provocative but not heavy handed. One of my favorites of all time. If you are a reader that likes to get lost in the world of a book this one is for you.

Be prepared. It's LONG. So, if you think a book over 200 pages is too long winded or the author can't get to the point, this isn't for you.
If, however, you like a book that's funny, original, thought provoking and intricately plotted you
will love it.
I sank into this book and it kept me up nights for a couple of weeks because I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen to the characters and to see if the bad guys were really bad and the good ones as good as they appeared. It wove a very effective spell and I was immersed in a world where magic was real and the magicians held real power and questions of good and evil were not philosophical, but practical everyday matters.

If you've ever wondered why people can do obviously unethical things and maintain that they are not guilty of anything this book will answer the questions. It will also shine a light on your own times of blindness to your faults and transgressions. Not for the reader who wants to maintain their illusion of blamelessness. If you want to become more aware of how you fool yourself into excusing your bad behavior and become a better person this book points out how to recognize your motivations and actions.

I can't say I loved this book, despite my adoration of Margaret Atwood. It was so disturbing and such a bleak depiction of a completely believable and not very distant future that it left me apprehensive. It stays with me, though so that months later I can't get it out of my mind. I think it serves the purpose of great writing in that it provokes thought and shakes up the reader's comfortable complacency. I highly recommend it for readers who like a challenge.

Compelling and lyrically written story of a man examining his life at its end and finding that the things he lived for may not have been worth the sacrifice. Some readers find it slow, I would describe it as liesurely and dream like, a book you can settle into and inhabit like a lazy summer afternoon. Sad, compelling and beautiful.

I could not put this down. Written in a spare and achingly clear voice. But, oh so bleak. I didn't get the hope out of it that some readers do and it left me frightend and despairing. It is, however, a masterful telling of a difficult story. It stays with me despite myself.

Trachtenberg's essays about his tattoos and the life he was living when he got them are funny, painfully honest, and thought provoking. You won't look at tattoos the same way after reading this book. I keep hoping to find more writing by him.
