Caroline's family was killed by Kiowa Indian as they traveled west in a wagon train. She was raped and tortured held captive by White Bear. He beat her all the time until Little Wolf, chief of the northern Cheyenne bought her to be his wife. He didn't share his furs with her, he had two wives already. His wives helped heal her, saving her life.

Caroline was returned to her uncle but the town treated her like a whore since she had been Little Wolf's wife. She sold her half of the store to her uncle loaded all kinds of supplies up to take to the Cheyenne Indian when she heard they were planning to move north.

Zach MacAlister's wife was murdered by Indian and his son taken captive. He agrees to guide Caroline to the Indians, he doesn't tell her why he is helping her or that he is a Major in the army looking for his missing son.

Fascinating story of the plight of the Cheyenne Indian as the leave the reservation in Oklahoma and head to the hunting grounds in Montana. Little Wolf pushed his people, most on foot to run from the soldiers. Ms. Lyon did her research in this history rich romance.
