This anthology makes use of one of the most pronounced themes in science fiction---the 'What if...?'
What if a single battle is won by the other side instead of the way it happened in our own world? Would the entire war have gone the other way? Who or what else would be altered with that single change? How far would the effects reach out?
An excellent collection!

From back cover: At Gaugemela the Macedonians had Alexander and the Persians had DARIUS. Result: world conquest. But what if the Persians had ERWIN ROMMEL. Or what if GEORGE S. PATTON had commanded Southern forces at Bull Run, and LINCOLN had become a Confederate Prisoner? The possibilities are endless...

The anthology contains the stories:

The Test of Gold / Lillian Stewart Carl;
Tradition / Elizabeth Moon;
And to the Republic For Which It Stands / Brad inaweaver;
The Charge of Lee's Brigade / S. M. Stirling;
The Craft of War / Lois Tilton;
Queen of the Amazons / Jody Lynn Nye;
The Phantom Tolbukhin / Harry Turtledove;
An Old Man's Summer / Esther M. Friesner;
The Last Crusader / Bill Fawcett;
Billy Mitchell's Overt Act / William Sanders;
A Case for Justice / Janet Berliner;
A Hard Day for Mother / William R. Forstchen;
The Captain from Kirkbean / David Weber;
Vive l'Amiral / John Mina;
Bloodstained Ground / Brian M. Thomsen;
Vati / R. M. Meluch.

A series of stirring "what-if"s, some obscure, some preposterous, but all entertaining.
