Anna Swanwick (1813-1899) was an English author and feminist, born in Liverpool. In Berlin she studied German, Greek, and Hebrew, and after settling in London took up mathematics also. Her volumes of translations appeared as Selections from the Dramas of Goethe and Schiller (1843); Faust, Tasso, Iphigenie, and Egmont (1850); complete translation of Ęschylus (1873); and Faust (1878). She assisted in the founding of Girton College and Somerville Hall, Cambridge; advocated the study of English literature in the universities; and signed John Stuart Mill's petition to Parliament for the political enfranchisement of women. Besides her translations, Miss Swanwick published several books of her own writing.
