This is #5 in Tanya Huff's Victory Nelson and Henry Fitzroy vampire series. Somewhat similar to a series by Laurell Hamilton, but less grim.
Henry Fitzroy, vampire, writer, and bastard son of Henry VIII, had survived for centuries by obeying the vampires' code. He did not slaughter needlessly, did not drew attention to himslf, and never invaded another vampire's territory. But now Henry was about to do the unthinkable. He was going to break the code. It began when Henry woke to the twilight and the discovery that a ghost had invaded his inner sanctum. This was the start of a dangerous nightly game. Henry was allowed to ask one question of his mysterious visitor. If the answer was no, some unsuspecting innocent would die. It soon became clear that what this wraith wanted was revenge on those responsible for his death. Henry couldn't find the source of the murder on his own. He had only one choice--to call on private investigator Vicki Nelson for help.
Excellent! I really thought that the 4th and 5th books in this series (Blood Pact and Blood Debt) were the BEST...unusual for a series to get so much BETTER as it went along! Creepy, fabulous, romantic...great!
A little mixing of genres here, vampire plus frankenstein myth, monkey's paw...really quite horrifying, as someone is creating frankenstein-like regenerated corpses to do their bidding - and the people being brought back are aware of who they are and what's happening to them. Disturbing.
Book # 5 in this excellent series starring Henry Fitzroy, vampire, writer, and bastard son of Henry VIII!
Tanya Huff's Blood Books, along with her Shadow books, are some of my favorites. If you enjoyed Buffy, I think you'll appreciate the fast pace, the modern setting, the smart-assed heroes and the blend of real, honest to god horror nicely blended with wry humor and fun.
