Clive Fencott (born 1952) is a writer, sound poet, performer associated with the British Poetry Revival and an academic.
Fencott was born in Lydney and started writing poetry in the mid-sixties while studying at art college. In 1974 he started attending the experimental poetry workshops organised by Bob Cobbing at the Poetry Society. As a result of this he developed an interest in improvised vocal performance and went on to perform extensively in Britain, Europe and the USA and in particular at sound poetry festivals. He was a founder member of the performance group JGJGJG with Chris Cheek and Lawrence Upton and also performed extensively with Bob Cobbing. At that time he also worked regularly with free improvising musicians. In the 70s and 80s his work was published extensively by small presses such as: Writers Forum, Pirate Press, Underwich Editions and Bluff Books; and magazines such as: Rawz, Poetry Information, words worth, and Pod.
In 1983 he gave up performing and writing to concentrate on an academic career and in 1987 moved to the North East of England to take up an academic post at the then Teesside Polytechnic, soon to become Teesside University.
In the early 90s he collaborated extensively with Bill Griffiths who had by then also moved to the North East of England. This collaboration produced two co-written pieces for performance, 'The Dinosaur Park' and 'Variations on the Life of Cuthbert'.
Since then his writing has been concerned with extended prose pieces prone to poetry.
Fencott remains at Teesside University where he currently lectures and researches in digital media and video game theory in the School of Computing. He gained his PhD in virtual reality theory in 2003. He has over forty refereed, academic publications to his name.
