Colin Falconer (born Colin Bowles in North London, 1953) is the author of sixteen novels, including 'Harem', 'When We Were Gods', and 'Anastasia'.
He moved to Australia in his twenties and worked variously as a taxi driver, semi-professional soccer player and played guitar in rough pubs before joining an advertising agency. In 1984 he moved to Sydney to pursue a career as a writer.
He has worked as a freelance journalist contributing articles to many newspapers and magazines in Australia and overseas including The Australian, Playboy, Cosmopolitan, The Bulletin, Qantas magazine, San Francisco Chronicle, GH (UK), She (UK). He was at various times a columnist for the National Times, Ansett Inflight Magazine, Gourmet Traveller and The Australian Women's Weekly. His very first paid piece in The National Times led to him being sued by RSL president Bruce Ruxton. His proudest moment!
He also wrote for radio and television, while working on his first novel, 'Venom', which was eventually five years in the making.
He has been a full-time novelist since 1990, writing as Colin Bowles, Colin Falconer and Mark D’Arbanville, with his work published widely in Europe, the UK and the USA. His books have been translated into seventeen languages. He travels regularly to research his novels and has completed promotional tours for translations of his novels in Mexico, Turkey and Romania.
"Harem", the story of Suleiman the Magnificent, sold over 150,000 copies in Germany alone and Aztec was on the best seller lists in Mexico for four months. Anastasia, a moving and evocative novel based around the legend of the missing Russian princess, and My Beautiful Spy, a love story set against the haunting backdrops of wartime Bucharest and Istanbul, were both best sellers in Australia.
He travels regularly to research his novels. An Australian critic once introduced him to an audience this way: "Colin Falconer's novels are based on dedicated research and a profound knowledge of his subject, stories of passion and human frailty drawn on a vast canvas, about the perennial nature of love and the human spirit."
As Mark D’Arbanville, he published his first contemporary novel, THE NAKED HUSBAND with Bantam in 2004. It sold over 60,000 copies in Australia and reached No9 on the Australian Bestselling Fiction list for that year. Its sequel, THE NAKED HEART was published in 2005.
As Colin Bowles he has published six novels for children and young adults. His last, NIGHTS IN THE SUN(2003) won the 2004 WA Premier’s Literary Award for the Best Children’s Book of the Year.
He has written nine humour books, the latest I’VE BEEN FLUSHED FROM THE BATHROOM OF YOUR HEART - the 100 Worst Songs Ever(Allen & Unwin) was published in October 2008. An adult non-fiction title THE YEAR WE SEIZED THE DAY, co-authored with Elizabeth Best — is an inspirational memoir of the authors’ 1000 km walk of the Camino in Spain and was published Allen & Unwin in 2007. This was his first travel book. His second saw him running with the bulls in Pamplona, chasing tornadoes across Texas and Oklahoma, cage shark diving in South Africa, and getting tear gassed in La Paz on his way to the Death Road in Bolivia.
He has been a guest at numerous Writers’ Festivals in throughout Australia and recipient of numerous Writer-in-Resident grants.
He also worked for fifteen years as a volunteer ambulance officer in his spare time. His wife of twenty years, Helen, died in 2002. He has two grown daughters. He is currently based in Adelaide in South Australia, but he travels constantly.
