Drugs, abortion clinics, Vietnam war and Afghanistan war are the many pressure points that this book highlights within one couple's journey together and apart. Jumping between the past and the present, the reader is taken back into the Vietnam/Woodstock time to find a couple trying to find their way both in their own individuality and within the couple.
Gordon was young man who wasn't quite sure what path he wanted to take, but he did know he wanted Glenna by his side the entire way. Glenna was pursuing the doctor route, but you knew as a reader that she wasn't absolutely sure what her true passions were. Unraveling their story simultaneously in the past and the present was interesting and I enjoyed how the reader was exposed to the secrets and the back story. I absolutely loved the formatting, it was different, but it gave the book character.
I thoroughly enjoyed the journey because it showed that relationships can take some hard hits when both the individuals in it are not quite sure about themselves. You can not be a good partner unless you are fully aware of your own self-worth. Although there was quite a lot of drug use and sexual interactions, the greater story was interesting and the plot had enough to enjoy the story above what may have been happening in the late 60s.

Peter Golden's debut novel is sharp, clever and compelling with two characters that will burrow into your heart. When they fell in love in the 60's, life was different than it is now. Their differing opinions and beliefs drove them apart, even though they still cared for one another. Now, thirty-five years later, Gordon wants to re-connect with Glenna. Even though they've both had great careers and have both been married, they decide to try again. But what if you can't go back?
With women's rights, politics and war a backdrop against two soul compliments, Comeback Love will keep you riveted. The author does a fantastic job of flipping back and forth between the past and the present, keeping the details of both times realistic. The reader gets glimpses into history as well as the journey these two individuals have taken alone and together, all merging together as one into a remarkable read. Highly recommend!!

I picked up the book at a Goodwill thrift shop because of the cover. The couple walking in the snow amidst the snow and towering buildings caught my eye. This is a story about second chances at love. I read this in a few days. The story goes seamlessly from the present to the 1960s and 1970s. I didn't come of age in that era, but I know enough of it to see how the author anchored the story so well in that era. There are a lot of references to the casual drug use, easy sex, women's rights and abortion rights. If frank references to those bother you, this is not the book for you. I don't have a problem reading about these if it's true to the characters and it was. Both hero and heroine are strong characters who don't hesitate to reveal their feelings. This wasn't a story about some Big Misunderstanding.
The heroine is an extremely bright, beautiful medical student who is part of a group involved in abortion rights. She is passionate, fearless and outspoken. The hero is a handsome young writer who is trying to find himself. He's brash and given to jealousy. They have a passionate relationship, but they each have insecurities that get in the way of being together. I'm not giving anything away when I say they don't end up together. Thirty-five years later on a snowy evening a few days after Christmas, the hero, now long since divorced and with a grown son, enters the medical office of the heroine and the story takes off from there. Will they reconnect? Will she even see him? What's driving him to see her so many years later? And more importantly what drove them apart so many years ago when they seemed so in love?
I love books at second chances at love. There's something very romantic about love entering one's life in middle age. You appreciate it more and you treasure it whereas you're so careless with it in your youth. I think the author could have spent more time in the present. There's a little bit too much of the past love story. I wish the author had spent a little more time about what happened in the intervening years. Other than that, I didn't find fault with the story.

This book was really good. The characters were really interesting I couldn't put it down.
Set in the late 60's and present day, I thought the writer did a wonderful job portraying both eras, especially the time of the Vietnam war, peace, love and drugs. The story flows easily from past to present. The two main characters drift apart after a steamy love in 1969, only to reunite 35 years later.
Comeback Love is the journey into the hearts of these two lovers, who never really let go of each other.

Sweet book.
