Couldn't even get through it and it's a shame because it has potential. I think that the writer has talent, the plot was an interesting idea. I just couldn't connect with the characters.

I started out really liking the book, then got about 1/2 way through it and started wondering if I was missing something. It felt like it was not the first book in the series. I kept thinking I was supposed to know something that the author(s) hadn't mentioned about the society being built, but there were also times that I just plain felt like something really basic simply hadn't been mentioned and I just had to keep reading and hope it made sense later.

The characters all seemed a little too perfect - great friends who all love and trust each other completely, people who have access to great amounts of money, relationships that develop practically overnight, etc. It was a really quick read, but I can't help but think that if the author(s) had spent more time developing the characters instead of just dropping them into the story fully-formed, the book might have been twice as long...and twice as enjoyable.

From www.moirarogers.com : How do you make a Moira Rogers? Take a former forensic science and nursing student obsessed with paranormal romance and add a computer programmer with a passion for gritty urban fantasy. Toss in a dash of whimsy and a lot of caffeine, and enjoy with a side of chocolate by the light of the full moon.

By day, Bree and Donna are mild-mannered ladies who reside in the Deep South. At night, when their husbands and children are asleep, they combine forces to unleash the product of their fevered imaginations upon the page.

Crux by Moira Rogers
* I received this ARC free from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Crux is the first book in the Southern Arcana series by Moira Rogers. The reader is slowly pulled into this new world as the intricate details are revealed. The story contains intrigue, magic, shifters and love.

Mackenzie has been on the run for the last few months from a psycho that wants her to have his babies. He turned her world upside and she just wants to get back to a normal life. She ends up in New Orleans and starts considering a permanent life there.

Jackson agrees to do a favor for Nicki and immediately realizes that the issue is a lot bigger than she suspected. He is drawn to Mackenzie and wants to help her but she doesnt trust anyone.

In the beginning, Mackenzies character is very timid; she stays shut within herself and tries not to draw attention to herself. She is scared to death and has to always look over her shoulder. She immediately feels at home with Nicki and her friends but doesnt want anything to happen to them because of her. She is drawn to Jackson from the first time she sees him talking to Nicki in the bar. Can he be her knight in shining armor?

Jackson wants Mackenzie and tries really hard to be a gentleman with her, even though she doesnt make it easy on him. He wants her trust more than anything and is determined to prove to her that he plans on sticking around. The sexual tension between these two runs throughout most of the book, making the love scenes well worth the wait.

One of the things I loved about this book was that even though it started out a little slow, it picked up pace and I was done before I knew it. The world had to be set, that couldnt be helped but it was handled in such a way that most of it blended right into the story.

The book also had a great cast of characters. I enjoyed meeting them all and cant wait to see what the future holds for them, especially Mahalia she deserves some happiness. The cast of secondary characters are interesting and complex, with secrets all their own.

Overall I enjoyed Crux and cant wait to read the next installment, Crossroads. I give Crux 3 ½ Flaming Hearts.

I think at times the reader can tell that this was written by two people. The dialouge doesn't always flow. MacKenzie is on the run from a crazed stalker. Jackson is a PI that is hired by her current employer to follow her. MacKenzie learns things about herself she was unaware of due to extreme magic spells cast on her as a child. 3 stars
