From the back cover: He is an American, a patriot... and a disciplined commando trained to infiltrate and destroy. But a war game gone awry has turned Sergeant Mark Stitzer into a haunted victim of his own madness, a walking instrument of death. Now he is on his own mission-- a mission of vengeance, a journey into hell.

Hunted by the men who trained him, lured by the one person he trusts, he prowls the city, as stealthy as an animal on its own killing grounds. No one-- not the police, not the FBI, not the U.S. Army-- know how to stop him... and no one can predict the terror he is about to unleash.

For the 12th time, McInerny amazes and amuses with a secular adventure of Fr. Dowling of St. Hilary's, Fox River, Ill. The elderly audience at the parish center is excited by the tricks played by a visiting magician. Dowling's curiosity, though, is excited by the ring the entertainer borrows from Aggie Miller for his showiest stunt. When Aggie is murdered later, the priest joins his friend, Capt. Phil Keegan of Homicide, to find a link between the victim and the ring, inscribed "To FG from AG. Con amore." Arthur Grice, a wealthy contractor, says he had given it to his wife Frances, who has been missing for weeks. Despite the Grices' long and supposedly happy marriage, rumor now has it that "AG" disposed of "FG" and Aggie so he could go ("con amore") to Pamela Mathers, his young employee. There are other aspects of the case that lead Dowling to a "now you see it, now you don't" display worthy of any professional prestidigitator. Mystery Guild selection.

This was pretty much one of the worst books I've ever read. Don't waste your time, especially if, after reading the back of the book, you think Venus, the Goddess of Love, has anything to do with the story. It's a stupid, poorly-written, "comedy of errors" about a woman who works too much and hasn't had sex in a year. The characters are over-the-top, the situations are barely believable, and the ending doesn't match the style of the rest of the book. I'm angry at myself for bothering to finish it once I started it.

Campbell's In La-La Land We Trust received rave reviews and this maze-like sequel should, too. "La-La Land' is a Los Angeles area that private-eye Whistler knows well, turf for male and female whores, drunks and druggies. When lovely Nell Twelvetrees, a stranger in La-La, asks Whistler to be her bodyguard, he gladly accepts, and not just for the fee. He is captivated by Nell and eager to protect her from her husband Roger, a millionaire TV comic. Assaults on Whistler and the woman follow, as she tries to force Roger to settle a fortune on her during divorce negotiations. Also involved in these events are Jenny, the comic's lethal daughter, and her eerie boyfriend. A crooked cop, battered hookers and other types figure in the cunning plot. No one is what he or she seems, especially the Alice of the title. She plays a startling role in this chronicle by an author who shines as a satirist but creates feeling in the reader for even the worst of his debauched characters.

The author of the bestselling Crowned Heads and The Other depicts a tarnished Hollywood dream in these interrelated novellas chronicling the overlapping lives of five glamorous movie stars, four of whom are bound together by their love for the bedhopping agent who pushed them to the top. The narrator is Charlie Caine, an actor turned writer who ticks off the blur of unhappy events that befall these women as their careers soar and stall. There's Babe, a blowsy, cut-rate Mae West; Belinda, whose bad seed daughter ruins more than one life; fragile April, who crumbles into madness under the weight of constant tragedy; Maude, the gracious doyenne of American film whose happy marriage may have been an illusion; and the supremely bitchy Claire, a scrabbling, grasping survivor. Famous names and recognizable situations are sprinkled throughout for flavor, but only a few surprising twists hint at Tryon's storytelling prowess. Otherwise, these tales of alcoholism, faithless men and broken women seem unremittingly grim and tedious. Literary Guild main selection.
