Nice strong likable heroine, definitely more kick-ass than Sookie Stackhouse, and a good introduction to the world of Gunnie Rose. The alternate history world is interesting, with the US broken up after Franklin Roosevelt is assassinated plus a couple of devastating flu epidemics. It's a good fast-paced story too but rather repetitive...Gunnie shepherding her clients to a town, fighting some bad guys, getting a bath, then on to the next. It seemed to wrap up a bit too neatly at the end considering this looks like the beginning of a series, but no matter, now Harris can extend some of this plot line or not as she chooses. I liked it a lot, I hope we'll see more of Gunnie Rose and hoping she also expands her potential.

Charlaine Harris has a new world and character that is fresh and makes for an exciting read. This book kept me up late I just couldn't put it down. An alternate reality of a USA that didn't stay united, it was divided up by other countries. It is a lawless land. The lead character is a young woman who hired out as a guard and is good with her guns. It is part western part, part alternate reality, and solidly written to keep you wondering how she will survive.

A fun adventure story with likable characters and a enjoyable setting. In this book we follow Gunnie Rose, a gunslinger in an alternative historical world of the US. She is a hired for jobs of protection. When the job to protect a couple of wizards come across, she takes it even though she mistrusts magic and anyone involved in it.
Great story line but it got a little tedious when every town they go to the same thing happens. It almost seemed like the mission was forgotten and instead they just traveled to get shot at. Even so, it held my attention and I look forward to more adventures with Rose.
