  “I don’t eat TREES.”

“But sweetheart, broccoli is not a tree.”

“It’s a tiny tree and I don’t eat trees.”

As an adult, I know going against logic is a bad idea. As a father of a three year old, I also know “logical” depends on your frame of reference. For my son, broccoli looked like a tree so he grouped it with the tree family. And he didn’t eat trees.

This was not my first time debating my son, so I knew to adjust my world view to match his.

“OK, broccoli is a tree, but it’s a tiny tree, so we can eat it.”

“But it tastes bad.”

Aha! I had him. “You’ve never eaten broccoli. How do you know it tastes bad?”

“Broccoli is a tree and it has leaves, and I ate leaves in the backyard and they tasted bad.”

I didn’t see that one coming. I took a quick mental inventory of plants in our backyard. Was there anything poisonous? In a solemn tone I said “Sweetheart, you shouldn’t eat leaves, they can make you sick.”

“I know Daddy, that’s why I don’t eat broccoli.”

He had me. I conceded defeat, scooped up his broccoli and put it on my plate.

I think all parents can relate to your experiencne. Please let us know if you're able to have your son eat "trees" afterall, and how.
