H.Beam Piper is most famous for his LITTLE FUZZY, and the sequel FUZZY SAPIENS (aka THE OTHER HUMAN RACE.) Truthfully, when I bought the book, I was hoping that there might be a short story, some additional background on one of those books.
FEDERATION turned out not to be about the Fuzzies; nor is it a novel, but it's still worth a read. It's a collection of several of the classic Piper stories, as well as editorial comment and preface by Jerry Pournelle.
It contains the stories:
OMNILINGUAL
NAUDSONCE
OOMPHEL IN THE SKY
GRAVEYARD OF DREAMS
WHEN IN THE COURSE
