This short novel is sort of a reply to the Tam Lyn novels in which the lady saves her beau from Elfland. But the characters have to deal with real-world problems, the type that aren't solved by magically waving wands. Quite good!

From back cover: Harlicch, elf prince, had been hurled by wizardly deceit from the head of his mighty army to the world elves called Hell. But what Harlicch called Hell, college professor Barbara St. James called home, and as she hurried through the rainy streets of New York, magic was the furthest thing from her mind. Then a gang of muggers sent Barbara running for her life -- right into the protective arms of Prince Harlicch.
But when Harlicch saved Barbara from a horrible fate, he plunged her into a far more dangerous future. For united by love and destiny, the elf prince and college professor must now battle the powerful magic of Harlicch's enemies both on the mean streets and subways of New York City, and with the spell and sword, on the war-torn fields of Elvenhome itself

I put off reading this for a long time, but when I finally read it I was sorry I had. It was surprisingly well done with characters I could easily relate to. The story line was very good and the ending was GREAT! Don't pass this one up!
