Mina is trying to focus on her job as a flight attendant and not the problems of her five-year-old daughter back home or the problems with her marriage. The inaugural nonstop flight between London and Sydney will take 20 hours. The plane has barely taken off when Mina receives a chilling threat from an anonymous passenger who is intent on ensuring the plane never reaches its destination. Someone who needs Mina's assistance and who knows exactly how to make her comply. A lot can happen in 20 hours. You can save hundreds of lives, or the one that matters most. This is a page-turner with a surprise ending that I didn't see coming. It was a slow-start but once it took off the suspense began to build. The chapters switch between 3 points of view, Mina, Adam (her husband) and a passenger. If you like books that feel like roller coaster rides, then you will like this one.

A riveting and compulsive thriller. Fast paced, terrifying and sure to make you think twice the next time you book a flight. Mackintosh has written a book that will keep you up late to finish it. Twists, turns, confusion all play a part in this tale of climate terrorists gone amuck. We're left with the question'What would you do to save your child?'.

Clare Mackintosh consistently turns out enjoyable psychological thrillers and stories of domestic suspense. Hostage maintains the focus on family and plot twists that readers know her for, but is a bigger story with more characters and more action. Chapters alternate between the points of view of Mina, her husband, and passengers on the hijacked plane, which rachets up the suspense. Would be 5 stars but I thought the ending was a bit too happy with no consequences for Mina's actions.
