Ian Morris has been Professor of Classics and History at Stanford University since 1995. He gained his PhD at Cambridge University .

Since joining Stanford University Professor Ian Morris has served as Associate Dean of Humanities and Sciences, Chair of the Classics Department, and Director of the Social Science History Institute. He also founded and has directed the Stanford Archaeology Center.

Between 2000 and 2006 Professor Ian Morris directed Stanford University’s excavation at Monte Polizzo , Sicily.

Professor Morris has been awarded fellowships from both the Guggenheim Foundation , National Endowment for the Humanities., Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C. and Institute for Research in the Humanities, University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Professor Ian Morris is currently working on a number of books, including a study of slavery and globalization, a volume of the forthcoming Cambridge History of the World and an examination of western civilization co-authored with Harvard University's Niall Ferguson.

In his next book, Professor Morris answers the provocative question 'Why does the West Rule?' drawing on 20,000 years of history and archaeology, and the methods of social science.
