Before the end of the first chapter I was hooked. What a great story about these messed up folks, a 40ish widow beekeeper, a 16 year-old paraplegic with a 16+inch Mohawk, and a desperate, homeless, 24 year old ex-con, who found each other and themselves with the help of honey bees. Every single character in this book was a good player, every event lead to a satisfying ending.

As an aside, I find many of the bee books out there have what could be respectfully called "errors." Too much research probably done on YouTube. Other than they spelled honey bee as one word, this was the most accurate book on beekeeping I've yet to read. Even learned something pretty significant.

4 stars.

i read this book over two days. i couldn't put it down. there is so much grit and love in this story. the most beautiful part is that eileen garvin is able to show each character's individuality and vulnerabilities, and we get to watch each one of them grow into people who find themselves. we meet alice and jake and harry and "the girls", the honeybees. and the author offers us up some not so nice characters, too, who get their comeuppance. it's a really great ride and i highly recommend you take it.
