ETA: This topic is to get rid of reviews that aren't reviews. Things like book conditions, or copy and pasting of the blurb information that comes with the book. This is not to rate how useful reviews are to anyone!

Great idea to start a new thread! One comment. I'm not sure that I would consider *** or **** a bad review. To me it's pretty obvious that they mean so many stars out of five stars. Not a great review, but I would put it on a par with the "great book!" reviews - the ones that I don't mark as helpful or unhelpful - they are at least a review of some kind. That's just my opinion, though. |

I disagree, Lynne. A driving purpose of reviews is to allow a fellow reader to know WHAT you thought of the book and WHY. I mark all "great book!" reviews as unhelpful. They are. It's like describing someone as "nice" to another person. What does that mean??? Kind to animals and children? Smiles a lot? "Great book!" and "****" are the equivalents of "nice" in my book. I truly, truly would like to know WHY someone thought the book was great. Plot? Characters? Author diction? Saying that a book is "great" means nothing to me. Why waste my time with having to scroll through those to get to some decent reviews? |

Find help here It is not important whether you think the review of *** or **** or Great book! is a good review or not. What is important is that it is a review! They have stated their opinion, therefore it IS a review and should not really be marked a thumbs down. You don't have to give it a thumbs up, but you shouldn't give it a thumbs down. And it shouldn't be posted here for massive rating. What's wanted here are the really wrong reviews that list conditions, state that they didn't read, and the like. |

It is not important whether you think the review of *** or **** or Great book! is a good review or not. Then why on earth are we allowed to rate them? They have stated their opinion, therefore it IS a review and should not really be marked a thumbs down. Excuse me, but *I* have an opinion. Why is mine opinion about a crappy review any less important than the reviewer who posted the crappy review? What's wanted here are the really wrong reviews that list conditions, state that they didn't read, and the like. I thought you said no one should be marking a thumbs-down. Your statements make no sense. Define 'helpful,' Sherry. I've read the definition. You confuse "helpful" with "This is a review." If you look up the definition, 'helpful' does NOT mean "This is a review." If I see a review that doesn't give me helpful information in making a decision whether or not to read the book, I'm going to mark it as unhelpful. I tend to agree with Leigh on this one. The question that's asked when you give a review a thumbs up or thumbs down is "Was this review helpful?" To me, someone writing "great book!" isn't helpful AT ALL. Nor is ***. I mean, is that a 3/5 stars or 3/10 stars, or what rating system are they using? That said, most of the time I don't bother thumbs-up or thumbs-downing unless the review is REALLY helpful or REALLY out there, like the ones with conditions, "my book is this version," or "I haven't read this." (Love that one...gee thanks for bothering!) There are simply waaaaaaay too many reviews that consist of a short phrase or a couple of adjectives to take the time to try to single them all out. But I think if you're going to rate a review, people should answer the question that's put to us honestly, as it applies to themselves...WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL (to you)? Yes or No. Cheryl |

ALSO, here's a thought. I'm going to edit books by author/type for a while, I'm currently putting book descriptions on for all the Black Lace books; I've done 30/282 tonight. Maybe some of you might like to do this too; someone could do Nora Roberts, someone could do Jodi Picoult, etc. Check all titles, and all ISBN's here in the system. Just food for thought; I was getting burned out with the "I havn't read this....".....
